Fulcrum Neuroscience, Inc. is seeking a senior software engineer for a contract-to-hire position focused on building AI-driven software for biological models and model-enabled research. The work is hands-on and spans tooling, visualizations, integrations, and documentation that help teams develop, analyze, and iterate on modeling workflows.
Role Overview
You will support the development of AI-driven tools and capabilities for biological models, digital populations, digital twins, and model-enabled research. The role emphasizes building scalable and extensible software from early concepts and prototypes while maintaining clear documentation for other contributors.
Responsibilities
- Develop AI-driven tools and skills, including chat-based interactions and agentic workflows.
- Build MCP-based integrations that support model development and analysis, including workflows for model-based drug discovery and development.
- Create AI-enabled visualizations, dashboards, and automated parametric search tools for complex processes such as iterative goal-seeking tasks that can run autonomously or with human-in-the-loop support.
- Develop tooling to integrate and analyze external literature and data within the modeling platform.
- Translate concepts and prototypes into software solutions that can scale and remain extensible.
- Capture requirements from technical discussions and produce clear documentation, including commented code, architecture and workflow descriptions, and API documentation.
Required Qualifications
- BS in Computer Science or Engineering (or a related discipline).
- 5+ years of professional software development experience.
- Experience with vibe coding using one or more frontier models.
- Proficiency in Python and JSON, along with experience interfacing with API-driven platforms.
- Experience with Mathematica is a plus.
- Proven ability to write well-designed, well-documented code with documentation that helps other team members (architecture, workflow, and APIs).
- Comfort working in a fast-moving startup environment while managing multiple priorities and adapting to evolving deadlines.
Highly Desired Qualifications
- Experience developing scientific, modeling, and/or analytical software.
- Experience developing AI capabilities for agentic workflows.
- Experience building software that integrates with LLMs, including LLM APIs, RAG, and MCP.
- Experience using open-weight (local) LLM models.
- Familiarity with Bayesian statistics and simulation of systems of non-linear differential equations.
Technology Areas
The role involves work with Python, JSON, API-driven platforms, Mathematica, MCP, LLMs, LLM APIs, RAG, open-weight (local) LLM models, and Bayesian statistics.
Benefits
- Meaningful early-stage equity and a contract rate commensurate with experience.
- Opportunity to build modeling tools that support model-based research of Alzheimer’s and related disease at an early-stage company.
Work Location and Travel
The ideal candidate would be based in the San Francisco Bay Area and able to work at the company’s office in South San Francisco, CA one day per week.
Remote candidates are eligible if they are willing to periodically travel to South San Francisco.
Employment Type
This is a full-time contract-to-hire role, intended as a pathway to full-time employment.
