Software Engineer, Payments
Job Description
WEX Inc. is hiring a Software Engineer, Payments to join the Corporate Payments Engineering team working on the WEX Bill Pay platform. In this onsite role in New York, NY, you will help shape long-term service direction and deliver scalable software solutions that support the platform’s core capabilities.
The position emphasizes architecture, engineering execution, and building reliable, event-driven services on AWS Cloud using Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and database technologies including PostgreSQL and Oracle.
What you’ll do
- Develop, drive, and execute the long-term vision and strategy for Corporate Payments cross-cutting and core services.
- Collaborate on defining and implementing the architectural roadmap for the Bill Pay platform, aligned to business objectives, industry best practices, and other Corporate Payments engineering teams.
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable Java and Spring Boot applications running in AWS Cloud.
- Build and enhance event-driven services using Apache Kafka.
- Develop and maintain database solutions using PostgreSQL and Oracle, including SQL development and Oracle stored procedures.
- Support a team culture that promotes innovation, collaboration, empowerment, and continuous learning.
- Challenge the status quo by applying engineering practices that reduce time-to-market while maintaining quality and reliability.
- Work with other Corporate Payments engineering teams to reuse development practices, services, and components to reduce duplication.
Requirements
- 2+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Strong experience building applications with Java and Spring Boot.
- Experience developing and deploying applications on AWS Cloud.
- Experience building event-driven applications with Apache Kafka.
- Experience developing and supporting applications using PostgreSQL and Oracle Database, including Oracle stored procedures and SQL optimization.
- Experience writing high-quality automated tests, including unit, component, and integration tests, with a strong understanding of the test pyramid.
- Strong understanding of software design principles, security, and compliance requirements in cloud and data environments.
- Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and technical communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, agile environment with changing priorities.

Preferred qualifications
- Experience building applications in financial services or payments, including bill pay, credit card, accounts receivable, or accounts payable solutions.
- Experience developing cloud-native SaaS applications.
- Experience working with geographically distributed engineering teams.
Compensation: USD 96,100 to 115,500 per year.
