Job Description

W.W. Grainger is hiring a Senior Software Engineer (Software Engineer III) to help design, build, and support application software and systems that are delivered on time and within budget. In this hybrid role based in Chicago, you will work on a Customer Order team focused on cart experiences, order cost calculation, and payment and invoicing capabilities.

On this team, your work supports a high-throughput customer journey, including internal capabilities that calculate order costs and secure payment access. You will collaborate with technical teams, stakeholders, and product managers to translate business requirements into scalable, maintainable solutions.

What you’ll do

  • Design, code, configure, test, implement, and support application software and systems to meet delivery timelines and budget targets
  • Mentor junior engineers and coach the team through technical execution
  • Partner with technical teams, stakeholders, and product managers to understand business requirements that inform analysis and physical design
  • Develop product design solutions in collaboration with engineers, architects, and analysts to produce scalable and maintainable software
  • Use specialized skills as needed across Frontend/Backend/Full Stack based on platform or domain requirements
  • Implement continuous delivery activities (CI/CD) and support engineering best practices
  • Support team activities and pair with peers to work stories
  • Practice sensible defaults consistently
  • Deliver customer-facing cart experiences that currently span the main Grainger.com experience and expand to additional channels over time
  • Provide internal capabilities for order cost calculation, addressing freight, pricing, and tax considerations
  • Manage payment and invoicing capabilities so customers can securely access their payment information

Key requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required
  • 3+ years of modern software engineering experience, including designing, building, and deploying scalable software applications
  • Understanding of distributed system design
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting complex problems and processes
  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies and DevOps practices
  • Familiarity with building HTTP APIs

Compensation

  • Anticipated base pay range: $112,900 to $188,100 per year
  • Eligible for an incentive target of up to 10% (or applicable dollar amount) based on individual and company performance objectives, subject to the current incentive program terms
  • Pay range is not a guarantee and may be higher or lower than the stated range
  • Grainger may amend, modify, or terminate compensation and benefits programs in its discretion and consistent with applicable law
