Software Engineer - Industrial Systems

Sun Automation builds industrial software that connects operators to machines with clarity and speed. This onsite role in Glen Arm, MD focuses on developing a next-generation Human Machine Interface (HMI) for corrugated systems powered by Siemens Unified Architecture, bringing together responsive UI work, backend services, and reliable PLC integration.

You will work on a stack spanning React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript, Python backend services, OPC UA communications with Siemens PLCs, and potentially Elixir for concurrency- and fault-tolerance-heavy components in cloud or service environments.

What you will do

• Design and build a responsive, real-time HMI using React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Develop backend services in Python for data acquisition, processing, and API layers.
• Architect and implement dependable communication with Siemens PLCs via OPC UA.
• Build and maintain scalable, fault-tolerant cloud systems, leveraging Elixir for concurrency-focused components.
• Partner with controls engineers to translate machine recipes into operator-friendly interfaces.
• Implement real-time data streaming, alerting, and visualization systems.
• Support industrial reliability goals through observability and performance practices.
• Contribute to deployment pipelines and edge/on-premises system architectures.
• Write clear documentation and participate in code reviews.

What you bring

• React and strong JavaScript/TypeScript skills required.
• Experience building robust backend systems in Python or C++ required.
• Hands-on OPC UA experience required, including client/server work, data modeling, and security.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems, networking, and API design required.
• Experience with industrial automation, PLCs, or SCADA/HMI platforms required.
• Familiarity with asynchronous programming and real-time data handling required.
• Ability to debug complex interactions between hardware and software required.
• Preferred: experience with Siemens PLCs (for example, S7 series and TIA Portal ecosystem).
• Preferred: exposure to Elixir/Erlang or other high-concurrency, fault-tolerant systems.
• Preferred: industrial protocols beyond OPC UA (for example, Modbus or Profinet).
• Preferred: experience deploying to edge devices or other on-prem industrial environments.
• Preferred: familiarity with Docker and CI/CD pipelines.
• Preferred: understanding of cybersecurity practices in industrial networks.

Salary range: USD 90,000 - 125,000 per yearly. Location: Glen Arm, MD (onsite).
