Job Description

Build operator-facing software that actually holds up in the field. BurnBot, Inc. is based onsite in South San Francisco, where design, development, and testing happen in the same building. You’ll work close to the machines and validate your UI with operators during live burn conditions, so the tools stay legible under real pressure.

This role focuses on production front-end work for mission planning, live supervision, mapping, alarms/alerts, and the fleet tooling that supports those workflows. You’ll own key parts of the operator interface, including live telemetry, video, machine state, and control surfaces, built for streaming and real-time performance.

Responsibilities

  • Operator interface for live telemetry, video, machine state, and controls that remain readable and usable under pressure
  • Mission planning and mapping, including drawing treatment boundaries, setting plans, and reviewing what was actually treated
  • Alarms and alerts, shaping what interrupts an operator, how loudly it signals, and what action it asks for
  • Hands-on UX from research with crews to sketches and the built implementation
  • Design system ownership to keep the fleet tools coherent as the team and product evolve

Requirements

  • 5+ years building production front-end software, with strong TypeScript and React (or equivalent)
  • Experience handling real-time and streaming data in the browser, such as telemetry, video, or live state
  • Mapping and geospatial UI experience using Mapbox, Leaflet, deck.gl, or similar tools
  • Genuine design sense to turn ambiguous needs into usable interfaces
  • Testing discipline, since this software runs alongside active operations
  • Willingness to sit with operators in the field and observe the interface fail so improvements can be made

Technologies

TypeScript, React, Mapbox, Leaflet, deck.gl, ROS web bridges, WebRTC

Benefits

  • Equity via Incentive Stock Options
  • Health, dental, and vision
  • Flexible paid time off

Nice to have

  • Robotics, teleoperation, or industrial HMI interface experience
  • ROS web bridges, WebRTC, or low-latency video experience
  • Safety-critical or high-consequence UI experience
  • Design background alongside engineering
  • Wildland fire, forestry, or land management background

How we work

Onsite in South San Francisco with design, build, and test happening in one building, and proximity to the machines is part of the job. There is also flexibility: own your calendar, work hours when you’re sharpest, and go remote on heads-down days. Expect a few days each month in the field across California, Oregon, and Washington, including time watching your UI run on a live burn.

Location: South San Francisco, CA (onsite)
Salary: USD 115,000 - 170,000 per year
Experience: 5+ years
