Job Description
Build dependable software and grow your skills with Abbott Cancer Diagnostics at the La Jolla, CA onsite location. This Software Engineer I role pairs cross-functional, agile collaboration with mentorship and training, helping you learn the core concepts behind software components while contributing to design, development, testing, and maintenance.
What you’ll do
- Contribute to building defined software features, including investigating and fixing bugs and writing tests for basic software components, following detailed instructions provided for projects and work from leadership.
- With general instruction, drive limited-scope projects to completion by resolving routine issues within defined tasks.
- Learn quality standards, policies, techniques, and best practices as you support engineering execution.
- Develop foundational theories, skills, and practices needed to complete assignments of limited complexity.
- Provide project-based status updates to the project team.
- Build stable working relationships with peers, SMEs, and decision-makers.
- Support and comply with Abbott’s Quality Management System policies and procedures.

Core responsibilities and delivery focus
Work across Abbott’s Software Engineering teams to help develop, enhance, and sustain software systems in a cross-functional environment. This includes adhering to established design control processes and good engineering practices, contributing to engineering specifications, and documenting software requirements to determine an appropriate development methodology.
What you’ll need
- Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, Bioinformatics, or Engineering; or High School Diploma/General Education Degree plus 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.
- Basic knowledge of software development and design, plus relevant domain-specific skills.
- Understanding of object-oriented programming.
- Familiarity with RESTful web services, Relational Databases (e.g., Postgres, SQL Server), and ORM technologies (e.g., JPA2, Hibernate, Entity Framework).
- Experience designing and developing apps that access or use cloud-based frameworks (e.g., Azure, Amazon AWS Services/SDKs).
- Agile development tools, including JIRA and COnfluence.
- Ability to perform the essential duties with or without accommodation.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred qualifications
- Next Generation Sequencing data analysis tools and workflows.
- Familiarity with object-oriented languages such as Python (preferred), Java, .NET, or C++.
Salary: USD 81,500 - 141,300 per year. Experience: Minimum 4 years. Location: La Jolla, CA (onsite).
