Software Engineer

Robert Half is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to help design, build, and maintain backend services and to contribute to Android mobile development. Based in Chicago, IL, this onsite role focuses on scalable systems using Java and Spring Boot, along with hands-on support for RESTful APIs and production maintenance.

You will collaborate across product, business, and engineering stakeholders, translating technical requirements into working solutions. The role includes architecture and sprint participation, code reviews, and troubleshooting across application, database, and system performance.

What you’ll do

• Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services using Java and Spring Boot.
• Build and enhance Android applications with an emphasis on performance, usability, and maintainability.
• Partner with product, business, and engineering stakeholders to define technical requirements and deliver solutions.
• Develop RESTful APIs and integrations that support mobile and web-based applications.
• Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code aligned with established coding standards.
• Participate in architecture discussions, technical design reviews, and sprint planning.
• Conduct code reviews and apply best practices for software quality, scalability, and security.
• Troubleshoot and resolve application, database, and system performance issues.
• Support deployment activities, testing efforts, and ongoing production maintenance.
• Contribute to continuous improvement across development workflows, tooling, and engineering processes.

Required qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot in enterprise or large-scale environments.
• Professional experience developing Android applications.
• Solid understanding of object-oriented programming, design patterns, and software architecture principles.
• Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs.
• Strong knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
• Experience with Git and modern build tools such as Gradle or Maven.
• Familiarity with Linux-based development environments.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and debugging skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in cross-functional teams.

Compensation

USD 135,000 - 155,000 per year.
