Power BI Developer
Job Description
Hybrid Chicago-based contract role for a Lead Power BI Developer to design, build, and maintain enterprise dashboards, reports, semantic models, and analytics solutions.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain Power BI dashboards, reports, KPI scorecards, and data models that support informed business decisions.
- Build and optimize tabular data models using Power BI datasets, Azure Analysis Services, SSAS, and enterprise data warehouse standards.
- Connect to SQL, APIs, cloud platforms, flat files, and other enterprise data sources using Power Query (M) and robust data transformation techniques.
- Create and optimize advanced DAX calculations for complex business logic, time intelligence, and report performance.
- Enforce Power BI security and governance, including Row-Level Security, Object-Level Security, workspace governance, and access controls.
- Publish, manage, and support reports in Power BI Service, including app deployment, refresh schedules, and workspace administration.
- Partner with business stakeholders, data engineering, and analytics teams to gather requirements and deliver scalable BI solutions.
- Leverage Azure data tools such as Azure Data Factory, Synapse Analytics, Data Lake, and Microsoft Fabric.
- Support modern data platform architectures, including Lakehouse, Data Warehouse, and Fabric-based analytics environments.
- Maintain documentation, version control, and deployment pipelines using Azure DevOps, Git, or similar tools.
Requirements
- 3–5+ years of hands-on Power BI experience across Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service.
- Strong DAX, Power Query (M), data modeling, star schema design, and SQL skills.
- Proven experience building dashboards, semantic models, and enterprise reporting solutions.
- Solid understanding of relational databases, ETL/ELT processes, and data pipelines.
- Experience with Azure data platform tools, including Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Data Lake, or Fabric.
- Exposure to data security, governance, RLS/OLS, report optimization, and deployment practices.
- Ability to communicate technical solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, Data Analytics, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or equivalent experience.

Compensation
- Employment option: Consultant / Contract
- Base salary (FTE W2): $125,000-$155,000 per year, depending on experience, technical depth, and interview performance
- Annual pay range advertised: $125,000-$160,000 per year
- Contract hourly rate: $65-$70 per hour, depending on experience
