Job Description

General Dynamics Mission Systems, Inc is hiring a Senior Advanced Software Engineer to build and integrate mission-critical software for U.S. Navy submarine and surface platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain complex software systems using C++, Qt, Java, and Python
  • Independently own software components end-to-end, from requirements and architecture through integration and deployment
  • Implement distributed interfaces and services using APIs, AMQP, gRPC, Protocol Buffers, and event-driven architectures
  • Make well-supported design decisions for assigned components and subsystems
  • Integrate COTS, open-source, and custom-developed software into larger mission systems
  • Diagnose complex issues across concurrency, performance, networking, data, and system integration
  • Develop applications targeting Red Hat Enterprise Linux and containerized environments
  • Support deployments using Docker, Podman, Kubernetes (including RKE2) and Helm
  • Define and drive unit, component, and integration testing approaches
  • Conduct detailed code and design reviews and provide technical mentoring to other engineers
  • Communicate technical risks, findings, and recommendations to engineering and program stakeholders
  • Support laboratory and U.S. Navy platform integration activities

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering or a related STEM field plus 8+ years of relevant experience; or Master’s degree plus 6+ years of relevant experience
  • Department of Defense Secret security clearance required at time of hire
  • U.S. citizenship required

What Sets You Apart

  • Deep modern C++ expertise, with preference for Qt-based applications
  • Strong experience with Linux, distributed systems, networking, and multithreaded software
  • Experience with gRPC, Protocol Buffers, containers, Kubernetes, and Helm
  • Demonstrated ownership of large or technically complex software components
  • Strong debugging and root-cause-analysis skills across application and deployment layers
  • Knowledge of DevSecOps, automated testing, CI/CD, and secure software practices
  • Ability to mentor engineers and influence technical decisions without formal leadership authority
  • Experience with Navy, tactical, combat-system, or other mission-critical environments

Location: Manassas, VA (onsite). Salary: USD 149,902 - 166,298 per year.
