Software Engineer II - Blockchain

The Mastercard Blockchain and Digital Assets Engineering team is looking for a Software Engineer II to help build and support Ethereum/EVM and Web3 solutions for global markets in a collaborative Agile environment.

Location and Work Model

This is a hybrid role based in Arlington, VA, with three days per week onsite.

Compensation

Pay range (Arlington, Virginia): $106,000 - $169,000 USD per year.

Role Responsibilities

• Develop, test, deploy, and maintain blockchain applications, smart contracts, and Web3 integrations within the Ethereum/EVM ecosystem.
• Collaborate with senior engineers, architects, and product teams to deliver solutions that are secure, scalable, and reliable.
• Participate in technical design discussions and contribute ideas to address business and technical challenges.
• Translate business requirements into high-quality code aligned with engineering standards and best practices.
• Participate in code reviews, testing activities, and development processes to support software quality and long-term maintainability.
• Work closely with product, compliance, security, and engineering teams throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues across development, test, and production environments.
• Contribute to improving engineering processes, automation, tooling, and development practices.
• Develop and support cloud-native applications in containerized environments.
• Follow secure coding practices and operational excellence standards during development and delivery.

Required Qualifications

• Experience as a Software Engineer, Software Developer, or similar engineering role.
• Experience building applications using Ethereum/EVM and Web3 technologies such as ethers.js or web3.js (or similar frameworks).
• Working knowledge of Solidity and experience developing or maintaining smart contracts.
• Understanding of blockchain fundamentals, including transactions, wallets, gas, and common security considerations.
• Familiarity with smart contract development frameworks such as Hardhat, Foundry, or similar toolchains.
• Knowledge of software engineering principles, object-oriented programming, and modern development practices.
• Experience with programming languages such as Java, TypeScript, JavaScript, or similar technologies.
• Familiarity with source control systems such as Git and collaborative software development practices.
• Experience building or maintaining automated unit and integration tests.
• Exposure to containerization technologies such as Docker and cloud-native development concepts.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools.
• Ability to learn new technologies quickly and contribute in a fast-paced Agile environment.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Commitment to code quality, maintainability, security, and continuous improvement.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience.

• Experience with enterprise blockchain platforms such as Hyperledger Besu, Quorum, or Canton.
• Familiarity with Layer 2 scaling technologies, including Polygon, Arbitrum, or Optimism.
• Knowledge of smart contract security practices and common vulnerability patterns.
• Familiarity with non-EVM blockchain ecosystems such as Solana.
• Experience with Java and frameworks such as Spring or Spring Boot.
• Familiarity with TypeScript and frontend frameworks such as React or Angular.
• Exposure to AI-powered developer tools, LLM integrations, or agentic development frameworks.
• Experience developing applications in cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
