Job Description
eBay is seeking a Software Engineer 2 in San Jose, CA to help define, design, and deliver scalable distributed systems and microservices for the Value-Added Services (VAS) platform. The role combines backend development with user-facing interface work, along with engineering reviews and reliability-focused development practices.
Responsibilities
- Define, design, and implement highly scalable, resilient, and performant distributed systems.
- Create clear and well-documented design docs and participate in design and code reviews.
- Follow the Definition of Done (DoD) process to support quality, including maintaining over 80% unit test coverage and other release criteria standards.
- Build technical and domain expertise and apply it to solve product challenges.
- Use PromQL with Sherlock to analyze application status and support optimal uptime and performance across microservices.
- Use Java, Kotlin, and Spring Boot to architect and implement microservices for the VAS platform.
- Employ NoSQL technologies such as MongoDB and Redis alongside SQL databases to manage diverse data requirements and improve application performance.
- Use JUnit for unit testing and TestNG to develop integration tests, supporting a comprehensive testing framework.
- Design and implement user-facing interfaces using JavaScript, React, and Marko for the VAS platform.
- Use Java to architect experience service layers that orchestrate downstream responses and format outputs for seamless integration across iOS, Android, and web clients.
- Perform partial telecommuting from within a commutable distance.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field, plus one year of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
- One year of experience designing and developing large-scale software applications using Object-Oriented Design and Java.
- One year of experience with core computer science foundations, including data structures, algorithms, OOPs, and OOA/D.
- One year of experience building data-driven applications, such as RDBMS, NoSQL, and ElasticSearch.
- One year of experience designing and developing microservices.
- One year of experience with REST API framework.
- One year of experience with GraphQL.
- One year of experience delivering results in fast-paced environments using agile methodologies, Test Driven Development, and CI/CD.
- One year of experience with Spring or Spring Boot to design and implement microservices.
- One year of experience with messaging systems.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
- Remote roles are not eligible for U.S. visa sponsorship.

Compensation and Additional Information
- Salary range: USD 137,669 - 196,500 per year.
- Base pay may vary based on factors including location, skills, and experience.
- Total compensation may include a target bonus and restricted stock units, as applicable, plus a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and paid time off such as PTO and parental leave).
