Software Engineer

Software Engineer role supporting and enhancing KinetiCore banking solutions at SHAZAM in a hybrid environment in Johnston, IA.

Responsibilities

• Develop and support enterprise applications in a mixed IBM i environment
• Use fixed-format RPG for legacy systems and free-format RPG for new development and enhancements
• Deliver production-quality solutions focused on maintainability, performance, and long-term value
• Execute work across the SDLC: planning, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance
• Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve moderately complex software issues
• Collaborate with product partners and cross-functional teams, communicating technical details and tradeoffs
• Perform code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers and junior engineers
• Improve processes and tooling by identifying inefficiencies and proposing actionable solutions
• Research and evaluate new technologies, tools, and approaches for engineering challenges
• Create and maintain clear technical documentation for implemented features
• Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) and support improvements to reliability, scalability, and monitoring
• Act as a subject-matter expert for a specific application, subsystem, or process
• Participate in an on-call rotation with support and guidance

Requirements

• Minimum 3 years of professional software development experience
• Proficiency with RPG
• Bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer science, or a relevant field (preferred)
• Knowledge of Visual Studio Code (VS Code) with IBM i extensions to develop and maintain fixed-format and free-format RPG using modern development practices (preferred)
• Experience with AI-powered development tools, including GitHub Copilot within VS Code, to support code recommendations, documentation, improvement identification, and troubleshooting (preferred)
• Working knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design principles
• Familiarity with common software engineering practices including version control (Git), testing, and debugging
• Experience with modern development tools and collaboration platforms (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Atlassian Jira, Salesforce)
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to connect complex concepts to effective designs
• Clear verbal and written communication skills for technical topics
• Self-motivated with a growth mindset and eagerness to learn new technologies
