Job Description
The Travelers Companies, Inc. is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead GenAI initiatives for Legal & Compliance within Corporate Technology. This onsite role in Hartford, CT centers on designing, building, and delivering AI-powered solutions while providing technical guidance to the team. The position emphasizes applying AI to legal workflows and aligning engineering work with enterprise standards to drive measurable business impact.

- Salary: USD 139,400 - 230,000 per year

Responsibilities
- Work with AI use cases common to Legal & Compliance, including contract analysis, eDiscovery, legal hold automation, regulatory research, and policy Q&A
- Advise and align teams with enterprise standards and best practices across tagging, semantic versioning, API governance, source control, test-driven development, code quality checks, dependency management, security and secrets handling, and site reliability engineering
- Lead the development of test automation and shape overall quality expectations
- Demonstrate ownership of assets and drive operational excellence
- Lead stakeholder conversations, uncovering business problems and shaping solutions in partnership with business teams
- Communicate complex technical concepts in clear terms that highlight business value
- Identify learning opportunities and growth avenues aligned with strategic priorities for team members
- Direct and implement solutions to moderately complex, loosely scoped problems aligned with team goals
- Deliver work independently and by guiding other engineers
- Lead investigation and resolution efforts for critical incidents and high-impact defects
- Champion technology adoption and seek opportunities to improve the business through technology
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship while fostering a collaborative team environment
- Apply current industry trends to shape solutions within assigned efforts
- Seek opportunities to expand technical knowledge and capabilities
- Perform additional duties as needed
Requirements
- Hands-on experience building and deploying AI solutions end-to-end, including model integration, prompt engineering, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architectures, and orchestration frameworks (such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, or similar)
- Proficiency with AWS AI workloads, including Bedrock, SageMaker, Lambda, S3, Step Functions, and API Gateway
- Experience with AI model APIs and SDKs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock) and adapting foundation models for domain-specific use cases
- Expertise in designing AI agent workflows, including tool usage, memory management, and multi-step reasoning
- Ability to instrument AI systems with observability tooling to monitor performance, drift, costs, latency, and output quality in production
- Familiarity with prompt versioning, evaluation frameworks, and A/B testing for generative AI systems
- Experience integrating AI capabilities into existing enterprise platforms and workflows via APIs and microservices
- Solid understanding of data privacy and security controls for AI, including PII detection and masking, input/output filtering, and access-controlled knowledge bases
- Awareness of evolving AI governance frameworks and enterprise policies, with the ability to implement guardrails and audit trails
- Proven ability to collaborate with engineers of varying levels of expertise and share knowledge to strengthen the team
- Interest in applying engineering best practices and staying current with industry trends relevant to the domain
