Senior Microsoft SQL Developer

Astyra Corporation is hiring a Senior Microsoft SQL Developer for a 1-year contract with possible extension supporting a tolling modernization program. This hybrid role is based in Mechanicsville, VA 23116 (local candidates only) and focuses on modernizing SQL for microservices, building migration data workflows with Azure Data Factory, and partnering across .NET, BA, QA, DevOps, Cloud, and CAB teams.

Alongside hands-on engineering, you will help drive technical alignment and execution, working closely with a veteran SME and collaborating with the PM/Scrum Master to support project decisions and delivery momentum. You will also ensure modernization activities align with microservice boundaries and audit timelines, including secure handling requirements.

What you’ll be responsible for

• Lead collaborative technical design discussions for microservices database restructuring and API integration.
• Perform hands-on SQL engineering, including schema modernization, stored procedures, views, indexing, and performance tuning.
• Support .NET API development as needed, including backend services and data access patterns.
• Guide senior engineering talent through strong, engaging technical leadership.
• Collaborate with the PM/Scrum Master to support project execution and decision-making.
• Work closely with a veteran SME for technical alignment and domain expertise.
• Build migration logic and data pipelines using Azure Data Factory (ADF).
• Ensure SQL modernization aligns with microservice boundaries and audit timelines.
• Participate in code reviews and documentation reviews.
• Collaborate with .NET, SQL, BA, QA, DevOps, Cloud, and CAB teams for cohesive delivery.
• Support compliance requirements, including PCI retention rules and secure data handling.
• Operate effectively within delivery workflows and agile components as needed.

Required experience

• 10 years of overall IT experience.
• 7 years of SQL Server development experience.
• 5 years of .NET/C# backend development experience.
• 3–5 years of technical lead experience guiding engineering teams.
• 3 years of modernization or migration project experience.
• 3 years of experience with Azure SQL on IaaS VM environments.
• 3 years of experience building ADF pipelines and supporting ETL workloads.
• 3 years of experience supporting delivery and agile teams.

Preferred

• 2 years in state government or transportation-related environments.
• 2 years working in regulated or audited environments.
• 2 years exposure to microservices architecture concepts.

Team & collaboration

You will partner closely with a full modernization project team, including the PM/Scrum Master, veteran SME, .NET and SQL Developers, Business Analyst, QA, DevOps Engineer, and Cloud Engineer.

Compensation & contract details

• Pay: $70.00 to $75.00 per hour
• Expected hours: 40.0 per week
• Contract length: 1 year (possible extension)
• Work location: Hybrid remote in Mechanicsville, VA 23116
• Note: Corp-to-Corp (C2C) arrangements are not considered.
