Job Description

The University of Iowa is seeking a Senior Application Developer to join the Information Management HR Team in Iowa City. This hybrid role focuses on designing and building enterprise HR applications, crafting integrations, and delivering secure, maintainable software that supports campus operations across multiple departments.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop web services and applications to meet enterprise needs.
  • Create and support integrations that connect disparate systems.
  • Extend vended solutions across a range of subject areas.
  • Collaborate closely with HR business stakeholders to translate requirements into secure, maintainable enterprise applications throughout their lifecycle.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Extensive experience (typically 5+ years) designing, developing, and maintaining enterprise web applications with minimal technical direction.
  • Proficiency with web development languages such as Java, C#, Ruby, or PHP (PHP experience preferred).
  • Experience with web-based frameworks (CodeIgniter or Symfony), protocols, and related tools.
  • Relational database knowledge, with Oracle preferred.
  • Ability to use SQL and related tools to analyze data, troubleshoot issues, validate system behaviors, and support business operations.
  • Proven track record delivering enterprise software across the full SDLC, including requirements analysis, design, development, testing, implementation, maintenance, and production support.
  • Experience applying best practices such as version control, code reviews, testing, issue tracking, CI/CD, and automated deployment.
  • Ability to design simple, maintainable, well-documented software balancing business needs with long-term supportability and technical quality.
  • Strong collaboration skills to work with business partners and cross-functional teams, translating requirements into technical solutions.
  • Capability to manage competing priorities, take ownership of complex systems, and exercise sound judgment in a complex operational environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication to convey technical concepts, risks, and recommendations to diverse audiences.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with HR, Payroll, or Benefits web applications and related processes
  • Knowledge of ERP systems and data structures
  • Business analysis and process improvement skills
  • Familiarity with Higher Education administrative and academic processes
  • Experience maintaining or modernizing legacy applications while providing production support
  • Experience designing, developing, or supporting API-based integrations between enterprise systems
  • Understanding of security concerns and defensive programming techniques
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools with sound engineering judgment and code review practices
  • Strong organizational and personal project management capabilities
