Mainframe COBOL Developer
Job Description
Agility Partners is recruiting a Mainframe / COBOL Developer for a financial services client in Columbus, OH. This is a contract opportunity focused on building and supporting mainframe solutions that power financial data processing, reporting, and regulatory compliance.
You will work within a mainframe environment to deliver reliable batch and application changes, troubleshoot issues, and contribute to performance improvements. The role combines development, testing, and production support responsibilities to keep critical financial workloads running smoothly.
What you’ll do
- Develop, maintain, test, and optimize COBOL programs and JCL scripts for financial data processing and reporting needs
- Review business requirements, design technical solutions, and collaborate with stakeholders to implement enhancements
- Run thorough testing activities and troubleshoot batch processing and application issues to support system reliability
- Support performance tuning efforts to improve mainframe efficiency and throughput
- Document code changes in detail and participate in code reviews to uphold development quality standards
- Provide production deployment support and help resolve incidents to maintain availability and business continuity
- Partner with analysts, QA teams, and business stakeholders to deliver accurate, dependable, and scalable solutions
- Work with batch processing environments and implement enhancements across financial systems
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives for mainframe processes and applications
What you bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
- 3+ years of hands-on experience developing and supporting COBOL applications in a mainframe environment
- Strong technical knowledge of COBOL, JCL, DB2, VSAM, and Easytrieve
- Proficiency using File-AID, TSO/ISPF, and Abend-AID for development, debugging, and support
- Knowledge of Changeman or similar mainframe version control and deployment tools
- Experience with enterprise scheduling and batch processing tools in a production setting
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills for diagnosing and resolving complex technical issues
- Strong communication skills to collaborate with both technical and business stakeholders
- Ability to multitask, manage multiple priorities, and work independently
