Lead Software Engineer - Tech Incubation Team

Lead software engineer responsible for system design and hands-on development of technology incubation initiatives, turning ambiguous ideas into prototypes and MVPs, and delivering AI enabled capabilities; mentors engineers and partners with product, design, architecture, security, and business stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Steer system design and hands-on development for Wellmark's Technology Incubation initiatives, transforming ambiguous ideas into working prototypes and MVPs with speed.
• Act as a builder and technical catalyst, rapidly experimenting, iterating, and delivering proof of value that explores new capabilities, including agentic and AI enabled development, to unlock future business outcomes.
• Collaborate closely with product, design, architecture, security, and business stakeholders to shape concepts, validate assumptions, and translate opportunities into scalable paths forward.
• Serve as a subject matter expert and mentor to other engineers, establishing lightweight patterns and guardrails that balance quality and security while enabling fast, learn fast delivery.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or related field and at least 5 years of development experience (examples include Angular, NodeJS, Python, C++, .NET, SQL) OR 9 years of related and applicable experience.
• Strong analytical problem solving skills with high accuracy and attention to detail; proven ability to troubleshoot and craft creative technical solutions and provide innovative responses to complex issues.
• Experience with software development lifecycle methodologies.
• Ability to communicate with and coach team members, maintain a positive attitude, stay calm under pressure, be approachable, respectful, and take responsibility for outcomes.
• Big picture thinker able to translate the Wellmark as a Service WaaS strategy into design and development decisions.
• Strong capability to gather information, perform root cause analysis, define problems, formulate solutions, verify results, and optimize using data to support recommendations.
• Skilled at building relationships to gain broad support, with the ability to tailor communications to different audiences and share key information promptly.

• Mentor and collaborate with other technology areas to develop and deploy solutions, including adoption of new or enhanced software applications.
• Coordinate with company resources to achieve integration of products and processes; deliver timely results and strong customer service.
• Maintain relationships with Wellmark leaders and act as a primary consultant on business status, issues, process improvements, and technology enhancements or capabilities.
• Participate in project proposals, estimates, and proof-of-concept activities as needed.
• Stay aware of industry best practices and standards; contribute to enterprise standards, conduct code reviews, and ensure adherence to guidelines.
