Android Engineer, Plugin Developer Platform

OpenAI’s Plugin Developer Platform team is hiring an experienced Android engineer to help build Android experiences and reusable components for plugins inside ChatGPT.

Responsibilities

• Build Android experiences for plugins, connectors, and interactive apps within ChatGPT
• Create reusable Android components and interfaces to support a growing ecosystem of developer-built experiences
• Collaborate with platform engineers to connect native mobile experiences with APIs, SDKs, and backend systems
• Partner with developers and partners to surface mobile integration challenges and improve the experience of building for Android
• Enhance performance, reliability, architecture, testing, and developer tooling
• Drive projects end to end, from initial requirements through release, measurement, and iteration

Requirements

• Deep experience building Android apps using Kotlin and modern Android development frameworks
• Proven track record shipping consumer-facing mobile products at scale with strong focus on performance, quality, and user experience
• Platform mindset with interest in designing reusable interfaces and abstractions other developers can build on
• Comfort collaborating across engineering, product, and design, including working directly with developers and partners
• Enthusiasm for bringing AI-powered tools and extensible experiences to mobile devices
• Ability to thrive in fast-moving environments where you help shape both product and technical direction

About the Team

• The Plugin Developer Platform team builds APIs, SDKs, and tools that let people extend ChatGPT and Codex
• Work includes plugins, connectors, the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and interactive apps
• Plugins package instructions and skills with the connections to tools and data needed
• Responsibilities span plugin creation and publishing, systems that run plugins across products, and open standards developers can build on

Role Details

• Location: San Francisco, CA (hybrid)
• Hybrid model: 3 days in the office per week
• Relocation assistance available for eligible employees
• You will help deliver plugin foundations that enable developers to extend ChatGPT and help users discover and use capabilities from their devices
• Own features across exploration, implementation, launch, and iteration
• Engage with developers and partners to understand how workflows translate to Android

Compensation

USD 185,000 - 385,000 per year
