Software Engineer, Strategic Defense
Job Description
Build production software that helps protect the United States and its allies, with a team focused on faster, software-defined command and control. You will contribute to edge-deployed capabilities for missile defense while collaborating across engineering groups and working closely with end-users. This onsite role is based in Huntsville, AL with 10 to 30% travel alongside the team to test and deploy in real-world conditions.
Compensation: USD 166,000 - 220,000 per year. Anduril also supports employees with a comprehensive benefits package (available at little to no cost to employees), covering health, recovery, and more.
What you will do
- Own software solutions deployed to customers, operating at the edge of innovation and necessity
- Write and improve code that enhances robust C2 products and scales mission capabilities
- Collaborate across multiple engineering teams to plan, build, and test functionality of complex systems
- Partner with end-users to turn needs into features quickly while balancing user experience and engineering constraints
- Travel 10 - 30% to build, test, and deploy capabilities with the team in the environments where they are needed
Core technologies
Work will involve C++, Rust, Go, and Python, along with experience building C2 capabilities.
What you bring
- 3-8+ years writing production software in languages such as C++, Rust, Go, or Python, for real users or systems that depend on it
- Experience owning a feature or service end-to-end, including design, implementation, deployment, and support when it breaks
- Ability to debug issues in code you did not originally write and systems you did not design
- Capability to explain technical tradeoffs to non-software engineers, including operators, hardware engineers, and customers
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance
About the Strategic Defense mission
The Strategic Defense team protects the United States and its allies from ballistic, hypersonic, and air-breathing threats. The work builds a software-defined command and control layer intended to see, decide, and act faster than any human operator could alone. The team spans autonomy, tracking, simulation and wargaming, hardware, systems engineering, and test and evaluation to build an accredited fire control system fielded rapidly and at scale. The group also supports incubating and maturing AI-native offerings for the integrated air and missile defense domain.
Additional job details

- This role does not require an active clearance, but you must be eligible
- Write code side-by-side with elite peers across networking, autonomy, systems integration, robotics, and more
- Make pragmatic engineering tradeoffs to deliver desired outcomes in ambiguous situations
- Partner with teams in AI, Edge Hardware, Space Solutions, Networking, and Test Engineering to craft end-to-end systems for major strategic capabilities
Preferred qualifications
- Interest in critical software with real-world impact
- Exposure to robotics, distributed systems, networking, or real-time systems
- Experience with mid and upper tier Air Defense Command and Control (C2) programs
- Experience where software touches physical hardware
- Background building solutions involving significant amounts of data processing and analysis
