Job Description
This is a Director-level backend engineering role centered on building and operating production-grade services. The position focuses on backend services and APIs, distributed systems, and long-term production resilience, using Java and Python and related technologies.
Location and Salary
- Location: New York, NY (onsite)
- Compensation: USD 120,000 - 170,000 per yearly
- Minimum experience: 4 years
Responsibilities
- Design and build new backend services and APIs from scratch
- Work on distributed systems that meet real scalability, latency, and reliability constraints
- Make deliberate trade-offs across performance, consistency, and system complexity
- Write clean, maintainable, and testable code that others enjoy working with
- Own services end-to-end across design, build, deploy, and operate
- Debug production issues and improve system resilience over time
Required Qualifications
- Strong proficiency in Java and Python for backend engineering
- Solid understanding of HTTP fundamentals
- Strong grasp of object-oriented design, clean class modeling, and design patterns for multi-threaded and event-driven systems
- Good command of data structures and collections, including practical selection criteria
- Hands-on experience with multi-threaded and event-driven systems
- Awareness of memory usage, time complexity, and space complexity
- Experience with dependency injection and lifecycle management
- Understanding of AOP concepts such as advice, pointcuts, and cross-cutting concerns
- Experience with transaction management
- Familiarity with connection pools and resource management
- Experience designing read and write APIs with stability, scalability, and performance in mind
- Exposure to event-driven systems, pub-sub patterns, and fault tolerance
- Familiarity with caching strategies, including local and distributed approaches
- Practical understanding of logging, monitoring, and observability
- Working knowledge of security fundamentals, including authentication, authorization, and encryption
- Ability to think through problems clearly and communicate reasoning during problem solving
- Comfort working without perfectly defined requirements while prioritizing clarity, correctness, and simplicity
- Ability to explain design choices and follow ownership through to resolution
- Strong proficiency in Java and Python for backend application development
- Solid understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns, and data structures
- 4+ years of relevant experience
- Experience building scalable REST APIs and distributed systems
- Hands-on experience with multi-threaded and event-driven systems
- Experience with messaging and pub-sub systems and event-driven architectures
- Exposure to batch processing and data pipeline technologies
- Knowledge of the Spring Framework, including dependency injection, AOP, and transaction management
- Familiarity with databases, caching, connection pooling, and resource management
- Understanding of security fundamentals, logging, monitoring, and observability
- Experience with unit testing, CI/CD pipelines, and agile development practices
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Comfort collaborating with business stakeholders and working in globally distributed teams
- Nice to Have: Experience with BDD testing frameworks and tools
