Software engineer, agents

WRITER is seeking a fullstack software engineer to help design, build, and scale AI-driven agent systems that can carry out autonomous workflows. This role focuses on creating agent-driven services and the infrastructure behind them, while integrating enterprise data and external services for reliable, observable execution.

You will work across product, AI research, data, and UX to turn high-level agent use cases into production-ready software, with an emphasis on security, performance, and maintainability.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain scalable, secure agent-driven services and systems that autonomously accomplish tasks using modern AI frameworks.
• Develop and enhance robust infrastructure and high-throughput APIs for core agent capabilities including memory, communication channels, skills, intelligent decision logic, security, and workflow management.
• Integrate agent capabilities with backend services, data stores, vector databases, search and retrieval systems, and external APIs.
• Collaborate with product managers, AI researchers, data engineers, and UX teams to translate high-level agent use cases into production-ready software.
• Ensure reliability, monitoring, and observability across agent components, including metrics, logging, CI/CD, and fault tolerance.
• Contribute to architectural design decisions and participate in rigorous code reviews to support code quality and long-term maintainability.

Requirements

• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience, with 3+ years of Python proficiency in production environments.
• Proficiency in agentic coding, shown through daily use of tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, and other agentic coding platforms.
• Demonstrated experience building distributed systems, microservices, or complex backend APIs supporting AI and agent workflows.
• Solid expertise integrating AI models, agent frameworks (such as Langraph or Agent Harness or platform-specific tooling), vector databases, and large context reasoning services.
• Understanding of agent orchestration patterns, state management, and asynchronous workflows.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and operational engineering best practices.
• Good grasp of performance optimization, testing frameworks, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a “connect + challenge + own” mindset.
• Experience on AI agents coordinating multi-step actions, reasoning, or autonomous decision-making loops.
• Contributions to open-source agent toolkits or SDKs.
• Experience with frontend technologies (React, TypeScript) for tooling around agent management interfaces.

About the Role

This role is open at multiple levels, with compensation ranges adjusted based on experience, expertise, and the scope of the position.

Location: San Francisco, CA (onsite)

Salary: USD 132,000 - 240,000 per yearly

Minimum Experience: 3 years
