Senior Software Engineer

This Senior Software Engineer role designs, builds, and deploys scalable software using Scala and backend languages, leveraging AWS and Kubernetes within Disney Entertainment and ESPN Product & Technology.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable, secure, and efficient software applications using Scala and other backend languages.
• Leverage AWS services such as Cloudformation, EC2, Lambda, S3, and Dynamo to deploy and manage cloud applications.
• Implement containerized solutions with Docker and deploy services on Kubernetes to ensure reliability and scalability.
• Architect distributed systems that are fault tolerant and highly available, applying event driven, microservices, and data consistency concepts.
• Provide observability through tagging, metrics, and logging, using Datadog to monitor real time health and performance.
• Collaborate with product managers, UI/UX designers, and DevOps engineers to define requirements, design systems, and deliver features.
• Maintain high code quality by writing clean, testable code, conducting code reviews, and mentoring junior engineers on and offshore.
• Address complex technical challenges and pursue ongoing improvements in performance, scalability, and reliability.
• Adhere to team practices for the safe use of AI models and propose enhancements as appropriate.

Requirements

• Degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering or a related field.
• 5+ years of software development experience with a focus on functional programming using Scala stacks.
• Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services and Kubernetes for container orchestration.
• Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, Microservices Architecture, and Event Driven Architecture.
• Excellent problem solving, attention to detail, and ability to work in a collaborative, fast paced environment.
• Experience with Scala ecosystems such as ZIO, Cats, and Cats Effect; plus Modern Java, Kotlin; familiarity with AWS tools like Cloudformation and Terraform or similar; experience with Istio and Spinnaker; full software development lifecycle including post release maintenance; Agile practices; and version control systems like Git and Jira.
