Senior Financial Software Engineer

Surlamer Investments is building full-stack software to power financial modeling, analytics, and investment workflows, and it needs a Senior Financial Software Engineer to help design, build, and scale those systems. Based in Newport Beach, CA, this role blends engineering depth with strong finance and capital markets understanding to turn quantitative concepts into production platform capabilities.

You will work across the stack, from backend infrastructure in Python to frontend applications in TypeScript and Next.js (or React), while also strengthening model validation, data flows, integrations, and the user experience of financial information.

Responsibilities

• Design, enhance, and scale software systems supporting financial modeling, analytics, and investment workflows
• Build and implement quantitative models covering fundamental equity analysis, valuation, options pricing, portfolio risk, and trading strategy evaluation
• Develop and maintain backend infrastructure and platform services using Python
• Develop and improve frontend applications using TypeScript and Next.js, React, or comparable technologies
• Apply UI/UX principles to improve usability, information architecture, and presentation of financial information
• Design and maintain relational database structures, data flows, and application integrations
• Improve integrations with financial data sources, APIs, and internal algorithms
• Test and validate models, system components, and platform workflows for accuracy, reliability, and robustness
• Support development of risk frameworks, including scenario analysis and performance tracking
• Collaborate with investment and leadership teams to translate financial concepts and platform requirements into technical solutions
• Document methodologies, assumptions, system architecture, and technical decisions
• Evaluate and implement new capabilities in agentic AI, LLMs, and financial engineering to enhance the platform

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Finance, or a related field; Master’s degree or higher preferred
• 5+ years of professional full-stack software development experience
• Demonstrated hands-on experience across UI/frontend development, backend systems, and relational databases
• Advanced proficiency in Python
• Strong experience with TypeScript and Next.js, React, or comparable modern frontend frameworks
• Experience designing full-system architecture across backend systems, APIs, relational databases, data flows, frontend applications, and system integrations
• Strong understanding of UI/UX principles and experience developing polished, user-facing applications
• Experience with relational databases, including schema design, querying, and normalization
• Hands-on software testing and validation experience
• Experience leading software engineering teams and setting technical direction
• Experience developing or working with financial markets, quantitative models, trading systems, or financial analytics tools
• Strong working knowledge of fundamental equity analysis, valuation, and options and derivatives
• Strong communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
• Must live within commuting distance of Newport Beach, CA, or be willing to relocate
