Job Description

Columbia Sportswear Company is hiring a Senior Data Engineer to strengthen its analytics and reporting ecosystem with robust data modeling, reliable ETL/ELT pipelines, and governed business intelligence. This hybrid role is based near Portland, OR, with onsite four days per week, supporting end-to-end delivery from ingestion through curated datasets and self-service access.

Role focus

You will design analytics-ready data foundations using Kimball-style dimensional modeling, develop transformation workflows with testing and documentation, and help maintain governed Power BI semantic models. The work also includes enforcing data quality, lineage, security policies while delivering data ingestion into data lake and lakehouse environments such as Data Bricks and Synapse.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement Kimball-style dimensional models and analytical datasets
  • Develop transformations with tests, documentation, and data contracts
  • Build and maintain ELT/ETL workflows into data warehouses and data lakes, including orchestration, monitoring, and cost/performance tuning
  • Create and maintain governed Power BI semantic models and datasets
  • Enable self-service access while enforcing data quality, lineage, and security policies
  • Share data and tool usage to improve organizational access and support ad hoc analysis for stakeholder decisions
  • Explore internal and external data sources and partner with BSAs and Data Engineering teams to ingest data into data lake/Data Bricks/Synapse
  • Elicit and clarify business requirements
  • Document specifications, KPIs, and acceptance tests
  • Deliver demos, office hours, and enablement
  • Implement CI/CD using Git-based workflows, along with unit/integration testing and data observability SLAs/SLOs
  • Profile SQL and storage strategies, including caching and compute scaling
  • Contribute to catalog/lineage, RBAC/ABAC, PII handling, and retention standards

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, or related field (foreign equivalent acceptable)
  • 36 months of experience in the job offered or related position
  • SQL development experience, including complex queries, stored procedures, views, joins, and performance tuning in SQL Server environments
  • ETL/ELT development using SSIS or equivalent tools, including data mapping, transformations, workflow scheduling, and job automation
  • Power BI development, including semantic models, dashboards, and reports
  • Experience creating DAX measures
  • Experience with Power Query (M) transformations
  • Experience publishing to Power BI Service
  • Dimensional data modeling experience, designing star and snowflake schemas using Kimball or equivalent methodologies
  • Data validation and profiling experience, including optimization, incremental refresh, and cross-system reconciliation
  • Experience working with databases and cloud platforms such as Azure SQL or Snowflake
  • Experience using JIRA for issue tracking and project management
