Job Description

Vital IT Services is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to architect, build, and optimize secure, high-performance data pipelines and storage solutions. This role supports customer-facing evaluation of business needs and helps translate requirements into reports and dashboards, working closely with data and development teams from planning through deployment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable data infrastructure and automated pipelines that ingest, transform, and move high-volume data securely.
  • Define and optimize data models, including relational and non-relational database structures, and tune query performance for reporting and operational applications.
  • Own monitoring and validation of data flows to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Map and resolve data dependencies across external APIs, legacy databases, and cloud infrastructure, converting unclear inputs into actionable execution plans.
  • Collaborate with data and development teams to support task estimating, technical documentation, and timely delivery data updates.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of dedicated data engineering experience with large-scale production databases and distributed data environments requiring high compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to build complex data pipelines, including experience with heavy data orchestration tools and extraction from complex third-party API networks.
  • Advanced expertise in SQL/NoSQL query tuning, data warehousing principles, schema evolution, and index optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud data storage architectures, including AWS and Azure, and modern data pipeline practices.
  • Proven capability to debug mismatched data architectures, address breaking schema changes, and optimize slow, multi-system data jobs.

Additional Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in data engineering, analytics, or reporting roles.
  • At least 3 years of Business Intelligence experience is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, or another quantitative field is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL, SSRS, MS Excel, Power BI, Oracle, Tableau, and related Business Intelligence tools.
  • Experience working with multiple data sources, including MS SQL, Excel files, Azure SQL, Azure Cosmos DB, AS400, DB2, and cloud data sources.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Commercial (P&C) Insurance industry knowledge is a plus.

Measurable Outcomes

  • Maintain greater than 99% uptime and successful execution on automated core data pipelines.
  • Achieve greater than 80% predictability on committed sprint tasks and complexity points.
  • Ensure 100% weekly compliance on task logging, estimation, and database schema documentation in Confluence.
  • Respond to >= 90% of mid-level escalation requests within 30 minutes and fully unblock within 1 business day through resolution, delegation, or architectural decision.

Compensation and Location

  • Location: Allen, TX (hybrid)
  • Salary Range: USD 110,000 - 130,000 per year
  • Experience Minimum: 5 years
