Job Description
Optum is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to design, build, and sustain scalable full-stack applications using Java, with remote or hybrid work options from Boston, MA. The role blends hands-on development with architectural guidance while advancing AI-enabled engineering practices. Salary range: USD 112,700 to 193,200 annually.
Responsibilities
- Architect and implement scalable, high‑performance full‑stack systems using Java and modern frameworks, prioritizing maintainability and quality.
- Contribute directly to code and critical components, taking an active role in delivering complex features.
- Investigate production incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and lead timely resolution efforts.
- Maintain production systems, safeguard stability, and drive improvements in reliability and performance.
- Assess existing applications to propose enhancements that improve scalability, maintainability, and performance.
- Lead system design and architecture discussions, ensuring adherence to established principles and best practices.
- Mentor teammates on technical challenges, troubleshooting approaches, and implementation strategies.
- Conduct code reviews to uphold coding standards, testing practices, and quality guidelines.
- Collaborate with product, QA, DevOps, and architecture teams to align on objectives and deliverables.
- Advance continuous improvement through DevOps, CI/CD, and automation practices.
- Utilize AI-assisted development tools such as code generation and test automation to boost productivity.
- Identify opportunities to integrate AI/ML capabilities (APIs and models) into applications where appropriate.
- Evaluate AI‑driven options for automation, monitoring, and intelligent decisioning within the platform.
Requirements
- 12+ years of experience in software engineering with strong hands-on development.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and cloud-native development.
- 5+ years of full‑stack development with Angular or React.
- 5+ years of experience with SQL and NoSQL databases and performance optimization.
- 5+ years of experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and modern engineering tools.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot production issues and provide application support.
- Proven track record of improving system design, performance, and reliability.
- Demonstrated capability to balance development work with production support and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Solid understanding of distributed systems, REST APIs, and overall system design.
- Expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and a microservices architecture approach.
- Proven commitment to promoting AI‑driven engineering practices within the team.
