Lead Software Engineer JAVA Backend
Job Description
JPMorgan Chase is seeking a Lead Software Engineer (Java Backend) to support trading technology initiatives within Asset and Wealth Management (AWM) in Columbus. The role works within an agile delivery environment, partnering with investment teams and contributing secure, production-ready software.
Role Overview
As a lead engineer, you will collaborate directly with Investment Teams, Traders, and Portfolio Managers while building and evolving backend services for a high-profile Asset Management platform. You will provide technical direction across engineering workstreams and help shape product design, application functionality, and operational processes.

- Collaborate confidently with Investment Teams, Traders, and Portfolio Managers, bridging communication without relying on business analysts or Project Managers.
- Operate effectively in a fast-paced environment, contributing to one of Asset Management's most high-profile platforms.
- Work as part of an agile team, deploying software updates to production and adjusting to evolving business needs and scale.
- Influence peers and project decision-makers on the use and application of leading-edge technologies.
- Provide technical guidance and direction to support business goals, as well as technical teams, contractors, and vendors.
- Drive decisions that affect product design, application functionality, and technical operations and processes.
- Act as a function-wide subject matter expert in one or more areas of focus.
- Contribute to the engineering community by advocating firmwide frameworks, tools, and Software Development Life Cycle practices.
- Develop secure, high-quality production code, and review and debug code authored by others.
Required Qualifications
- Formal training or certification on software engineering concepts, plus 5+ years of applied experience.
- Excellent programming experience in Core Java.
- Ability to implement TDD and BDD techniques, with testing approaches that leverage mocking frameworks.
- Understanding of IoC frameworks in Java, such as native Spring.
- Knowledge of next generation messaging and streaming technologies including Kafka, IBM MQ, Solace, or Ignite.
- Strong grasp of engineering principles, including CI/CD, application resiliency, and security.
- Demonstrated knowledge of software applications and technical processes within a technical discipline (cloud, artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc.).
- Overall knowledge of the Software Development Life Cycle.
