Job Description
University of Utah Health’s University Analytics & Institutional Reporting (UAIR) office is hiring Data Engineers to design and deliver reliable data transformation pipelines and reporting foundations. This hybrid role supports analytics and institutional reporting with hands-on work across data modeling, automation, and complex SQL, backed by a comprehensive benefits package.
Location: Salt Lake City, UT (hybrid). You must reside in the state of Utah and be able to work from campus 3 days per week.
What you’ll do
- Investigate source data structures, relationships, content, and quality to support requirements discovery.
- Design, build, implement, and maintain data transformation pipelines, processes, and reporting structures that support data science, strategic reporting, master data sources, enterprise integrations, point-in-time snapshots, and more.
- Automate and manage data quality audits and correction processes.
- Write complex SQL queries to support analytics and reporting needs.
- Maintain data and process documentation, including data flow diagrams, data concepts, keys, definitions, and process steps.
- Share ideas and knowledge, learn from others, and grow with the team as new methods and tools are explored through continuous improvement.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What you’ll need
- Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of experience, or Master’s degree and 4 years of work experience in institutional research, business analytics, data science, or a related field.
- Proficiency in querying, manipulating, and analyzing complex datasets.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to present complex data to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau and Microsoft Power BI.
- Experience with data querying languages, including SQL.
- Python coding proficiency.
- Experience working with APIs.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate across teams.
Equivalency statement: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (for example, bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Additional role details
- Salary range: $80,000 - $130,000 per year.
- Position type: Benefited Staff.
- This office is not able to support visa sponsorship; living in and working from Utah is a requirement.
