Job Description

Remote Data Engineer contractor role for LA County offering a 40 hour work week, with a 12 month assignment and a strong likelihood of extension or direct hire. Compensation sits at USD 55 to 60 per hour. This position is fully remote, backed by a supportive IT team and cross‑agency collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Work under the direction of an IT Manager or agency personnel to extract, analyze, map, convert, profile, cleanse, transform, validate, and load data from multiple legacy systems into the target solution while maintaining data integrity and reconciliation
  • Define data requirements, support cross‑agency coordination, and ensure converted data meets the needs of business users
  • Coordinate across organizational units, assist with planning and communication of data conversion activities, and help identify issues to maintain clear information flow among stakeholders
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer or training so staff can understand and work with converted data

Requirements

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience supporting field mapping, crosswalk analysis, and data validation during conversion efforts, including troubleshooting data quality issues such as blob-size anomalies and variable-length errors
  • Strong knowledge of legacy systems, flat files, mainframe‑extracted data, and structured or unstructured datasets
  • Experience supporting data mapping and crosswalk analysis across organizations and vendors, with ability to interpret legacy formats and data dictionaries
  • Understanding of data conversion requirements such as retention needs, cutover sequencing, and identifying required data elements; familiarity with ETL processes, reconciliation, encrypted file validation, SFTP structures, and source‑to‑target relationships; ability to document extraction logic and validation rules; effective cross‑organization coordination; ability to resolve data inconsistencies and quality issues
  • Knowledge of government data retention guidelines
  • Three (3) years of experience participating in organization coordination activities, including file reviews and data dictionary prioritization, and working with encrypted test files and regulated data
  • Three (3) years of experience working with legacy and relational data technologies such as mainframe environments, DB2, FOCUS, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, data science, engineering, or a closely related field; additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis
