Staff Software Engineer (with QE/ Automation Focus)
Job Description
The Hartford is hiring a Staff Software Engineer focused on Quality Engineering and automation, onsite in Charlotte, NC.
Responsibilities
- Define and govern the Quality Engineering strategy, standards, and operating model to ensure scalable, high-quality delivery.
- Design and maintain automated test frameworks across applications to enable reliable validation of complex systems.
- Lead hands-on automation efforts, review automation work from teams, and resolve advanced automation challenges.
- Diagnose and fix defects across distributed systems and third party integrations.
- Improve system testability, observability, and reliability through code contributions and design collaboration.
- Guide end-to-end quality execution from ideation through production to ensure delivery of business capabilities with high quality.
- Mentor engineers and SDETs on quality engineering best practices, automation patterns, and scalable test design approaches.
- Promote and leverage AI and GenAI tools to enhance testing efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity.
Requirements
- Minimum 8 years of software engineering experience, including at least 5 years in Quality Engineering, Test Automation, or quality leadership roles.
- Proven experience testing and automating across diverse platforms (Java, .NET, SaaS, COTS, Mainframe) including cloud-native applications on AWS and/or GCP, with containerized and microservices architectures; strong API and contract testing experience (REST Assured, Postman/Newman) and performance, resilience, and reliability testing practices.
- Advanced experience designing and scaling test automation frameworks across application tiers, with hands-on expertise in Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, JUnit/TestNG, NUnit, and PyTest.
- Ability to define, track, and leverage quality metrics to drive measurable improvements such as defect reduction and defect leakage prevention.
- Proven track record of testing and quality execution within Agile and scaled delivery environments, including sprint-level testing, end-to-end validation, and regression/stabilization testing.
- Ability to balance hands-on technical delivery with strategic leadership, influencing quality practices across teams and technology stacks.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, coaching, and collaboration skills, with the ability to translate quality risks into clear business and engineering trade-offs.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Compensation
- Base pay range: $116,000 - $174,000 per year
