Staff Software Engineer
Job Description
Forward Financing is seeking a Staff Software Engineer in Boston with a hybrid work arrangement. In this role, you will shape frontend architecture, mentor engineers across teams, and guide technical direction across multiple domains to deliver robust user experiences.
Responsibilities
- Architectural Influence: Drive the design and implementation of substantial cross-functional systems that require alignment across several engineering teams; bring deep expertise in building complex systems across multiple apps and languages.
- Technical Leadership: Set the technical direction for your domain, elevate code quality, design patterns, and operational excellence; serve as a frontend ecosystem SME who promotes architectural integrity and best practices, guiding long-term frontend strategy.
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Lead intricate cross-team initiatives with sustained engagement; ensure timely resolution of technical challenges and proactively address technical debt.
- Mentorship and Elevation: Improve engineering quality and efficiency through technical guidance and sponsorship; mentor junior engineers and raise the bar across the team.
- Problem-Solving: Tackle technical debt and promptly resolve incidents and bugs to maintain system reliability.
Requirements
- Experience: Typically 8+ years of technical leadership, mentorship, and sponsorship.
- Frontend expertise: Deep experience designing and implementing frontend systems and scalable architectures across multiple software applications and/or languages.
- Influence: A strong ability to influence others within a technical organization.
- Full-stack perspective: Frontend architecture experience with an understanding of how backend services impact the end-user experience.
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Agile background: Several years of experience in agile software development.

Desired Technical Skills
- Modern React & TypeScript at scale: Production experience with React and TypeScript in long-lived codebases.
- State & data architecture: Strong understanding of server-state and client-state patterns and where each belongs.
- Design system stewardship: Has owned or shaped a shared component library, comfortable with primitive-based foundations, composition-first APIs, and Storybook-driven development.
- Design partnership & craft: Fluent in Figma, collaborates on designs, and prioritizes loading, empty, and error states for polished products.
- Accessibility as a baseline: Proficient with WCAG 2.1 AA, keyboard/focus management, and ARIA semantics.
- Full-stack capability: Capable across the stack, designs API contracts with backend partners, reads and ships backend changes when needed, and reasons about data shape, latency, and auth implications for UX.
- Performance & observability: Optimizes for real-user performance using Web Vitals, bundle analysis, and RUM (Datadog or equivalent).
Compensation
- Annual Targeted Salary: $170,000-$200,000 USD
- Annual Target Bonus: 12%
- Compensation Range: $170K - $200K
