Sr. Software Engineer, Object Storage, Tesla Cloud Platform
Job Description
Tesla Cloud Platform (TCP) underpins how Tesla delivers virtual machines, metal, storage, and networking at global scale across multiple datacenters. In this role, you will build and own the control plane for Bucket as a Service, delivering multi-tenant, S3-compatible object storage with integrated identity and quota enforcement.
As a senior software engineer based in Palo Alto, CA (onsite), you will design the APIs and orchestration that connect TCP to underlying object storage backends, while maintaining reliability, backward compatibility, and production readiness through on-call support.
What you’ll do
- Own and develop the Bucket as a Service control plane, including bucket lifecycle management, access policies, and quota enforcement
- Design and build S3-compatible APIs and storage abstractions that present a consistent interface across multiple object storage backends
- Implement multi-tenant bucket isolation to ensure strict separation of storage resources between organizational units and projects
- Integrate bucket access control with TCP’s IAM layer, including bucket-level and object-level permissions, service account access, and policy enforcement
- Develop storage quota management across project, tenant, and zone dimensions with usage tracking and reporting
- Build full-stack features using Go, gRPC, PostgreSQL, and React/Next.js for bucket creation, management dashboards, and administrative tooling
- Design background jobs and reconciliation loops to synchronize state between TCP and underlying storage backends
- Own the API layer (REST/gRPC) for object storage endpoints, ensuring reliability and backward compatibility
- Collaborate with networking, identity, DNS, and infrastructure teams to deliver integrated storage provisioning workflows
- Participate in the global on-call rotation for production storage services
What you bring
- 5+ years of professional backend development experience with Go (Golang), including distributed systems and API development
- Experience building or operating object storage systems such as MinIO, Ceph RGW, NetApp StorageGRID, or similar S3-compatible platforms
- Experience with PostgreSQL, including schema design, migrations, and query optimization
- Strong understanding of the S3 API specification and object storage semantics (buckets, objects, ACLs, lifecycle policies, versioning)
- Experience with gRPC or similar RPC frameworks
- Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts including state synchronization, concurrency, eventual consistency, and data durability guarantees
- React, Next.js, and TypeScript experience is a plus
Technologies
- Go (Golang), gRPC, PostgreSQL
- React/Next.js, TypeScript, REST
- MinIO, Ceph RGW, NetApp StorageGRID, S3-compatible platforms
- S3 API, TCP (Tesla Cloud Platform)
Compensation and benefits
Expected compensation: $168,000 - $252,000 per year salary, plus cash and stock awards and benefits.
- Medical plans with multiple options and $0 payroll deduction
- Family-building, fertility, adoption and surrogacy benefits
- Dental (including orthodontic coverage) and vision plans with $0 paycheck contribution

What to expect from TCP Bucket as a Service
This position builds the Bucket as a Service control plane inside TCP, rather than integrating as a managed storage vendor. You will abstract multi-vendor object storage backends into a unified, self-service experience through TCP’s portal and APIs, enabling Tesla engineers to create, manage, and operate S3-compatible object storage across Tesla’s on-premise infrastructure.
You will also collaborate closely across compute, networking, identity, and infrastructure to meet reliability and scale requirements for Tesla’s mission-critical workloads.
