Specialist, Software Engineer (RUST)
Job Description
As a Specialist, Software Engineer focused on Rust at L3Harris Technologies, you will support mission-critical Integrated Systems & Encryption programs by guiding adoption, integration, and conversion work to Rust. You will contribute across the software development lifecycle with a Scrum team, translating requirements into working, maintainable solutions.
Responsibilities
- Support software application development with a primary focus on Rust.
- Lead the adoption and deployment of Rust, including associated techniques, idioms, design patterns, and tooling across multiple product lines.
- Apply computer science, engineering, and mathematical analysis principles to software development for the target application(s).
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering organization members to develop and evaluate library interfaces and operational performance requirements for the overall system.
- Participate in software development lifecycle phases, including requirements analysis, design, implementation, integration, and formal test.
- Investigate root causes of complex issues and implement solutions independently or with a multi-discipline team.
- Develop software test plans and procedures, along with other relevant technical documentation.
- Use modeling tools and equipment to establish operating data, conduct experimental tests, prototype, and evaluate results.
- Participate in peer reviews, identify, track, and repair defects.
- Utilize multiple software languages, primarily Rust and C/C++, when developing code.
- Travel to other L3Harris locations for onboarding, integration, or Scrum activities, with an expected requirement of more than 10%.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior relevant experience.
- Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience.
- In lieu of a degree, 8 years of prior related experience.
- Active Department of Defense (DoD) Secret clearance.
- 1+ years of production Rust development experience with a deep understanding of the language.
- At least 2 years of experience with C/C++ development and object-oriented design.
Preferred Additional Skills
- Object-oriented design and implementation experience, including exposure to software modeling and UML tools such as IBM Rhapsody or MagicDraw/Cameo.
- Experience converting legacy C/C++ code to Rust.
- Experience with Information Assurance and/or cryptography.
- Experience developing software applications for the Linux operating system.
- Experience developing software libraries.
- Experience with NSA Type 1 certification or other software certification.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Location and Schedule
Job Location: Herndon, VA (On-site)
Schedule: 9/80 Regular (9/80 employees work 9 out of every 14 days totaling 80 hours, with every other Friday off)
Compensation
- Salary Range: USD 97,000 - 180,000 per year
- $10K Sign-On Bonus: Offered for qualified candidates
