Software Engineer II - Java/J2EE
Job Description
Join Unum Group in Chattanooga, TN as a Software Engineer II, where you will build and configure software across Unum’s portfolio with a focus on Fineos and Java/J2EE enhancements, integrating these solutions into the broader ecosystem. This role operates in an Agile environment and may involve mentoring teammates as you deliver high-value features. The position offers a salary range of $73,300 to $150,500 per year and is onsite.
Responsibilities
- Estimate, design, implement, and maintain new and existing features across the portfolio for a given business area.
- Complete complex feature development tasks end-to-end.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure effective delivery of features.
- Design, code, configure, unit test, maintain, and document software deliverables using established standards and tools.
- Lead sizing and estimation activities within the Agile team.
- Provide daily updates to the Scrum Master or Team Lead and the Agile team on progress and planned work, and flag blockers.
- Participate in code reviews and sprint retrospectives, sharing ideas for continuous improvement and actively seeking feedback.
- May assume lead responsibilities for portions of the work.
- Maintain a focus on delivering business value and priority.
- Ensure quality of new and existing features through manual and automated testing and by applying continuous integration where feasible.
- Demonstrate interest in software architecture and design solutions aligned with company standards.
- Lead proof-of-concept work and prototyping when needed.
- Collaborate with Business Analysts to confirm understanding of requirements and translate them into deliverable technical specifications.
- Work with UX designers to translate designs into working features efficiently.
- Partner with the Agile team to define the done criteria for each production stage.
- Coordinate with Test Engineers to ensure features meet the definition of done and transition smoothly to the next production stage.
- Foster an innovation culture by continuously improving delivery practices and evaluating new processes and technologies.
- Coordinate with Technical Support Engineers to transition features to production, ensuring performance criteria and release standards are met and stability is maintained.
- Automate testing to industry standards to ensure high-quality application delivery and efficient regression of existing features.
- Keep the Agile team informed of project progress using ALM tools and participate in daily standups outlining progress, plans, and impediments.
- Keep the end customer in mind to improve the user experience and deliver value.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science is preferred, or equivalent relevant experience.
- 4+ years of software development experience with demonstrated success.
- Strong Java development skills, including J2EE technologies (JSP, JMS) and integrations via Web Services and APIs.
- Experience configuring and customizing Fineos Admin Suite (Claims) with Java-based customizations.
- Experience with relational databases (Oracle, MS SQL) and solid SQL query skills.
- Analytical thinker with strong critical thinking abilities and attention to detail.
- Experience employing Agile development methodologies.
