Software Engineer II
Job Description
As a Software Engineer II at Varsity Brands, you will design, build, and deliver backend services, APIs, and system components that support a modern unified digital platform. This role emphasizes independent ownership, end-to-end delivery, production issue troubleshooting, and collaboration across product and engineering teams.
Role Location and Work Model
Farmers Branch, TX (hybrid)

Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs aligned to the platform architecture
- Own end-to-end feature delivery, from design through deployment and support
- Troubleshoot and resolve production issues by identifying root causes and implementing solutions
- Apply testing, performance optimization, and secure coding practices
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and system reliability improvements
- Collaborate with Product, Design, QA, and other engineering teams to deliver solutions
- Participate in technical design discussions and contribute to solution approaches
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, including SE I
- Design components and services within established architecture, making independent technical decisions within defined patterns
- Deliver scalable services and features that power Varsity Brands’ digital platform
- Improve engineering velocity and system reliability through high-quality development practices
- Contribute to platform consistency, reuse, and performance across engineering teams
- Support the transition to scalable, API-driven services and shared platform capabilities
- Drive adoption of shared platform capabilities through consistent, reusable service development
Required Qualifications
- 2 to 5 years of professional software engineering experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical discipline (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Strong understanding of backend systems and service-based architecture
- Working knowledge of cloud environments and distributed systems
- Understanding of system design principles and data modeling
- Proficiency in Java and backend development frameworks
- Ability to design and build RESTful APIs
- Ability to optimize system performance and scalability
- Ability to implement testing strategies and debugging techniques
- Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and production systems
- Ability to solve moderately complex technical problems independently
- Ability to navigate ambiguity within defined domains
- Ability to diagnose root causes and implement effective solutions
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams (Product, Design, QA)
- Ability to contribute to team-level improvements and engineering practices
- Ability to provide guidance and support to junior engineers
- Demonstrated accountability for end-to-end delivery outcomes
