Software Engineer I/II
Job Description
Microsoft is hiring Software Engineers for its Identity and Network Access engineering team to design and operate Microsoft Entra Security Service Edge (SSE) offerings. The role focuses on building large-scale distributed networking security services with an emphasis on security, AI-enabled capabilities, and operational reliability.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to design and develop large-scale distributed networking security software services and solutions.
- Use AI to deliver advanced security capabilities and improve engineering productivity.
- Apply modern software engineering practices through participation in design reviews and peer code reviews.
- Design systems using well-defined interfaces across multiple components, informed by data and telemetry.
- Deliver best-in-class services by ensuring components are modularized, secure, reliable, diagnosable, actively monitored, and reusable.
- Improve service test coverage by organizing and implementing integration tests and addressing problem areas.
- Evaluate testability, portability and monitoring, reliability, and maintainability, including readiness for shared and delivered code.
- Develop a working understanding of Microsoft businesses and work with mentors and leaders to contribute to cohesive, end-to-end user experiences.
- Focus on customer and partner needs using a data-driven approach.
- Troubleshoot and optimize automation, reliability, and monitoring for Live Site.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, or a related technical discipline, with proven coding experience in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, Golang, or Rust.
- Or equivalent experience.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements for this role.
Additional Security Screening Requirements
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: required to pass the Microsoft background check and Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire or transfer, and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field with proven coding experience in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, Golang, or Rust, or Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related discipline plus 2+ years of technical engineering experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, Golang, or Rust.
- Familiarity with core networking protocols and technologies such as HTTP, TLS, TCP/IP, and DNS.
- Experience with Unix/Linux based operating systems and open-source contributions.
- Experience working with proxy stacks such as Istio, Envoy, nginx, and HAProxy.

Compensation
Software Engineering IC3: The typical base pay range across the U.S. is USD $102,100 - $202,200 per year. In the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range is USD $133,800 - $219,200 per year.
Software Engineering IC2: The typical base pay range across the U.S. is USD $85,400 - $168,100 per year. In the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range is USD $111,100 - $183,700 per year.
