Software Engineer
Job Description
Nodal Exchange is seeking a Software Engineer to design, develop, test, and continuously improve distributed software systems. This hybrid role is based in the Tysons Corner area (Tysons, VA 22182) and includes stakeholder collaboration, organization-wide demos, and participation in an on-call rotation.
Role Overview
The Software Engineer will contribute to distributed systems with a focus on delivering high performance while maintaining stability. Work will include automated testing, requirement review for completeness and clarity, and demonstrations to colleagues across the organization. The role is overtime-exempt and includes on-call participation aligned with industry practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, maintain, and improve distributed software systems, balancing high performance with stability
- Build automated tests to support high-quality software delivery
- Provide demonstrations to individuals throughout the organization, actively collecting feedback to refine and improve work
- Review requirements for completeness and clarity, collaborating with stakeholders and customers to connect technical constraints with customer needs
- Participate in an on-call rotation in line with industry practices
Note: This position is overtime-exempt.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related technical field, plus 2+ years of experience
- Strong programming skills in Java or Kotlin, with a solid understanding of Object Oriented Design
- Knowledge or experience with Spring Boot, Docker, relational databases, and Git
- Strong problem-solving ability, including evaluating multiple solution approaches
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues
- Interest in coding and automation, paired with maturity to learn new technologies to address business problems
- Confidence in one’s ideas while remaining open to others’ ideas

Nice to Have
- Experience using AI coding assistants (for example, Claude Code or Cursor) to accelerate development while maintaining full ownership of code quality for production stability

- Familiarity with Hazelcast or Redis, Jmeter, ReactJS, RabbitMQ or Kafka, CI/CD, Grafana and Prometheus
- General knowledge of derivative trading

Compensation and Pay Transparency
Salary range: USD 90,000 to 130,000 per year (base salary, when annualized).
Pay transparency notice: The salary range is based on the D.C. metro area. The successful candidate’s starting salary will vary depending on permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including qualifications, skills, and experience.
