Job Description
The City of St. Louis is seeking a Software Developer I to diagnose and troubleshoot application errors, implement enhancements, and deliver custom software solutions and integrations while supporting end users and project work.
Role Summary
The Software Developer I applies technical training and knowledge of digital logic to diagnose and troubleshoot application errors and bugs and to implement application enhancements. The position develops custom software solutions and integrations, and provides application support alongside project-based work for improvements.

Compensation
USD 54,886 - 82,342 per year
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain Node.js and Express applications.
- Build custom API integrations with off-the-shelf systems such as Cityworks and Esri ArcServer.
- Write and optimize SQL queries.
- Build custom APIs that provide read/write operations for underlying applications and datasets.
- Manage a queue of service requests (tickets) to support end users or business owners with workflow or data-related issues.
- Analyze problem statements and communicate with customers to clarify the problem and the desired outcome.
- Troubleshoot service requests using experience, internal guides, online Oracle knowledge articles, and customer connect portals.
- If the issue is not resolved, coordinate with an outsourced managed services provider to investigate solutions.
- Propose solutions to customers and support implementation.
- Coordinate with customers to obtain positive confirmation or acceptance of solutions before resolving tickets.
- Participate on project teams to analyze and gather requirements, develop and build solutions, test with stakeholders, and implement in production.
- Attend project meetings and use application knowledge to guide discussions toward feasible solutions.
- Conduct independent project work to develop and test proposed solutions, with possible support from internal or external (consultant) resources.
- Work with stakeholders and end users to test solutions and pursue user acceptance.
- Support stakeholders during solution implementation and help manage change.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Programming or a directly related field.
- Minimum experience: 1 year analyzing, testing, and installing software and writing computer programs.
- OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

- Ability to operate and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery, and tools such as personal computers, modems, and related materials used in essential functions.
- Ability to utilize reference, descriptive, and advisory data and information, including technical operating manuals, requisitions, procedures, and non-routine correspondence.
- Math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, plus calculating percentages and decimals, and interpreting descriptive statistics.
- Ability to apply principles of rational systems and interpret instructions provided in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
- Ability to apply judgment, decisiveness, and creativity when evaluating information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
- Work typically occurs under generally safe and comfortable conditions without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
- Tasks involve light physical effort in sedentary to light work, potentially requiring lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects weighing five (5) to ten (10) pounds, such as computer hardware.
- Ability to work at a keyboard or workstation for extended periods.
- Ability to recognize and identify individual characteristics of colors, shapes, and sounds textures associated with job-related objects, materials, and tasks, such as installing new software.

Veterans Preference

City Residence Preference
City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive other preference will receive five (5) point preference on a 100 point scale. An additional one (1) point is added for City residents who receive any other preference on the same scale. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application.
