Job Description

Walgreens is hiring a Senior Software Engineer II in Deerfield, IL for onsite work supporting the Walgreens Digital/Online application. In this role, you plan, design, develop, test, and deliver software features for strategic, complex initiatives, with ownership spanning functional areas or entire product and project workstreams.

You will work across professional functions with advanced specialization, contributing to cloud-based and internet-related tooling, modern application architectures, and operational execution. The position also includes mentoring and, as needed, leading teams or projects to drive outcomes aligned with release plans and delivery commitments.

What you’ll do

  • Plan, design, develop, and test software systems and applications for enhancements and new products, including cloud-based or internet-related tools.
  • Write code that establishes and improves coding specifications, including for software programs and systems with limited prior precedent.
  • Deliver software features with high quality, aligned to release plans and delivery commitments.
  • Apply analysis to problems of diverse scope, using evaluation of identifiable factors to select effective methods and techniques.
  • Lead the daily work of an assigned work group or team, recommend modifications to daily operations, and adjust short-term priorities as needed.
  • Own a functional area, break down large requests into sub-tasks, and provide higher-level status updates.
  • Write test plans, review code changes, and take operational responsibility.
  • Set measurable goals and meet them, resolve a range of issues through creative solutions, and reduce complexity.
  • Own development and rollout for an entire product or a large project, including defining measurable schedules and monitoring task execution.
  • Champion processes such as Scrum and TDD, and write technical specifications while identifying risks before major projects begin.
  • Set engineering standards and, when needed, take on additional tech lead responsibilities to drive initiatives to completion.
  • Allocate and track the work of individual contributors, mentor less experienced team members, and participate in developing technical and business approaches for new or enhanced tools.
  • Network with senior internal and external personnel in your area of expertise, and collaborate across accountable teams, peers, and managers.
  • As needed, interact with vendors and/or customers to share information and improve workflow processes.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 4 years of experience in Engineering, Software Engineering, or a similar field.
  • OR a High School Diploma/GED and at least 7 years of experience in Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience writing code for moderate to complex online applications, microservices, or mobile applications, including deployment automation.
  • Experience designing and building moderately complex applications.
  • Experience writing automated test scripts.
  • Experience creating coding or scripting solutions to fix complex issues.
  • Experience engaging with executive-level stakeholders.
  • At least 2 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
  • At least 2 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership, and/or cross-functional team leadership.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time for business purposes (within and out of state).
  • Experience in an Agile environment.
  • Experience with DevOps and prior experience leading automation/DevOps or development engineering teams.
  • Prior experience with deployment automation for various applications across IaaS and PaaS platforms on large complex systems.
  • Experience working with Kubernetes on a microservices architecture for high-traffic applications.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure components including databases, networking, DNS, cloud services, orchestration tools, and containerization.
  • Experience operationalizing high-traffic web and mobile applications using monitoring and alerting for a polyglot application stack.
  • Web/backend developer experience, including mentoring a team of engineers, serving as a tech lead, or leading an engineering team.
  • Enthusiasm for promoting high quality standards across documentation, unit testing, code reviews, test automation, and CI/CD.
  • Hands-on full stack proficiency, including examples such as Java, NodeJS, SQL, NoSQL, React, and JavaScript.
  • Accessibility experience.
  • Data and analytics experience, including integrating, transforming, and consolidating structured and unstructured data for analytics solutions across cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  • Experience working with product owners and domain experts to deliver data analytics and data integration solutions.
  • Experience with SQL, Java, or Python, including relational and NoSQL databases such as Cosmos and Cassandra.
  • Experience with Azure technologies such as Azure Data Flow, Data Bricks, Azure Synapse, and Analysis Services, plus reporting tools such as Power BI, Business objects, Cognos, or Tableau.
  • Working experience with dimensional data modeling and best practices, and hands-on experience with data pipeline and integration tools such as Talend and Change Data Capture (CDC), including Spark and Azure APIs.
  • Ability to coach and guide technical engineers on source data understanding, analytical solution design, and critical operational support.

Compensation and schedule

  • Salary: USD 100,000 - 175,000 per year (salaried)
  • Work model: Onsite in Deerfield, IL
  • Work week: 30-hour work week
