Senior Software Engineer Backend Systems

Health Data Analytics Institute is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Data Retrieval Platform team. This role centers on designing and building distributed backend services and APIs that transform, store, and serve data for the HealthVision platform, with the goal of delivering fast, reliable, and scalable systems for clinical and operational use.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain a distributed set of AWS Lambda functions and REST API services that transform, store, and serve data powering the HealthVision platform.
• Own the development and maintenance of FastAPI services and API Gateway integrations, ensuring reliability, performance, and scalability.
• Collaborate across relational and non-relational databases to model, query, and optimize data storage and retrieval patterns.
• Work with ML Operations and Data Engineering teams to ensure data is structured, surfaced, and served in ways that support AI model inference and clinical application needs.
• Contribute to the full software development lifecycle — from design and implementation through testing, deployment, monitoring, and iteration.
• Champion engineering best practices including code quality, documentation, and agile/scrum workflows.
• Contribute to a culture of continuous learning, growth, and innovation within the Data Retrieval Platform team and across the broader engineering organization.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience as a software engineer with a focus on backend systems.
• Strong proficiency in Python for production service development.
• Hands-on experience building and operating distributed systems on AWS, particularly Lambda and API Gateway.
• Solid experience designing and building RESTful APIs, including FastAPI or similar frameworks.
• Proficiency working with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and non-relational databases (DynamoDB, MongoDB).
• Familiarity with the full software development lifecycle including design, testing, CI/CD, deployment, and monitoring.
• Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in ambiguous, fast-moving environments — you can set direction and make progress when requirements are incomplete or evolving.
• Comfortable working with Git and on a team using agile/scrum.
• Experience in healthcare or an adjacent regulated industry is a plus; familiarity with HIPAA requirements in practice is preferred.
• Startup experience is a plus — comfortable wearing multiple hats and moving quickly without sacrificing quality.
