Senior Data Engineer
Job Description
HealthLeap is building reliable data infrastructure for healthcare. This role focuses on turning messy clinical data from hospital systems into dependable model inputs, analytics, and user-facing APIs. If you care about correctness, monitoring, and recovery, you will help deliver trustworthy data end-to-end and earn meaningful ownership across the pipeline.
What You’ll Build
You will build and operate core data pipelines, from hospital ingestion through transformation and delivery. You will define the mechanisms that keep downstream consumers confident in the data, including data contracts and checks designed to detect missing records, schema changes, and incorrect values. When data arrives late or changes in unexpected ways, you will run backfills and recovery so systems stay current and consistent.
Responsibilities
- Build and operate pipelines spanning hospital ingestion, transformation, and delivery
- Deliver trusted data for ML pipelines, customer analytics, and user-facing APIs
- Define data contracts and implement checks for missing records, schema changes, and incorrect values
- Handle backfills, late data, pipeline failures, and recovery processes
- Partner with integration, ML, and product engineers to ensure data lands reliably where it is needed
Requirements
- 5+ years building production data systems with strong Python and SQL
- Experience owning pipelines that depend on messy, changing external data
- Strong data modeling and judgment around correctness, monitoring, and recovery
- Ability to trace issues across systems and own fixes through production
Technologies
- Python
- SQL
Compensation and Benefits
- $175,000–$275,000 base plus meaningful equity
- 100% covered healthcare premiums
- Unlimited PTO with a 20-day minimum
- 4% 401(k) match
- Laptop and home office budget
What Will Make You Stand Out
- Experience building data pipelines for ML products
- Experience with clinical data, EHRs, HL7, or FHIR
- Early-stage experience building and operating core data systems
Interview Process
- No LeetCode or puzzles; use the tools you would use on the job, including AI
- Intro call
- Data pipeline design
- Practical data exercise
- Onsite with the team in San Francisco
- Decision made the same week as the onsite
Location: San Francisco, CA (onsite). Work together in the office by default, with flexibility to work from home when needed. HealthLeap judges output, not hours. Compensation range: $175K - $275K.
Not a fit if: You want to own only one piece of the data stack, or you want predictable 9-to-5 hours. Deep rest is protected, but a hospital go-live can require 60+ hours in a week.
