Job Description

Ambarella is seeking a Senior Software Engineer in Ohio (onsite) to develop and optimize standards-based real-time hardware video codecs for AI-enabled camera silicon. This role focuses on leading codec algorithm development, supporting hardware and software co-design, creating verification and diagnostic tools, and optimizing embedded firmware performance.

Role Overview

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will take ownership of codec algorithm work with measurable goals around video quality, latency reduction, and hardware efficiency. You will also contribute to silicon validation through advanced diagnostics and verification, while guiding embedded firmware architecture and real-time optimizations. The position includes technical leadership and mentoring responsibilities across codec development projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and optimization of video codec algorithms targeting video quality, latency reduction, and hardware efficiency.
  • Design and implement reference codec models and performance enhancements.
  • Drive hardware/software co-design and silicon architecture modeling.
  • Develop advanced diagnostics and verification tools to support silicon validation.
  • Architect and optimize real-time embedded firmware solutions.
  • Lead software rate control design and optimization activities.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentor junior engineers on codec development projects.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define future video codec capabilities and requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience.
  • Expert-level programming skills in C and C++.
  • Strong experience in embedded software development.
  • Familiarity with video compression standards such as H.264, H.265/HEVC, AV1, or similar.
  • Experience with codec optimization, performance analysis, and system-level debugging.
  • Ability to lead technical projects and mentor team members.
  • Experience using AI-powered software development tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude, or similar) to improve engineering productivity and code quality.
