Senior Software Engineer
Job Description
Build software that moves with real-world technology while working from Garmin’s U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area (Olathe, KS, onsite). This full-time Senior Software Engineer role combines hands-on C and C++ development with technical leadership, project planning input, and peer-level engineering support for products, applications, or systems new to Garmin.
What you’ll do
- Serve as a leadership-focused individual contributor to carry out software development in C or C++.
- Lead complex software development designs and/or conduct reviews of architected modules and software systems tied to new technology, or that improve capability and performance of existing functionality.
- Translate functional requirements into well-defined tasks, balancing quality, quantity, and complexity of output.
- Research fundamental problems and implement algorithm solutions that are appropriate to the technical challenge.
- Provide peer technical assessments across areas of expertise, including new technologies and software design approaches.
- Contribute to project leadership and program planning by supplying technical input to product development plans and concept documents.
- Make substantial contributions to determining feasibility of project goals and objectives, applying sound judgment when setting schedules and managing risk.
- Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced Software Engineers (1 and 2).
- Suggest process improvements and author new procedures as appropriate.
- Deliver reliable solutions across a wide range of difficult problems using strong problem-solving techniques.
What you’ll bring
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Math, Physics or a related field, and minimum 5 years relevant experience, or an equivalent education and experience combination.
- Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule).
- Demonstrated ability to design well-architectured software systems and modules that support new technology or improve capability and performance of existing functionality.
- Demonstrated competence researching fundamental problems and implementing appropriate algorithmic solutions.
- Proven ability to act as a lead software engineer for complex software projects.
- Demonstrated capability to offer peer technical assessments in areas of expertise, new technologies, and software design.
- Strong proficiency writing software in C or C++, along with relevant experience and/or training in data structures or object-oriented design methodology.
- Strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated work style characteristics: positive, detail oriented, organized, team oriented, driven problem solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the ability to prioritize and lead in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
