Job Description

General Motors is building shared vehicle compute capabilities for its next-generation software-defined vehicle (SDV) solutions, and the Compute Systems Software organization plays a central role in that foundation. In this onsite role in Austin, TX, you will help develop embedded software and device drivers that enable automotive display solutions on Linux-based System-on-Chip (SoC) platforms, working closely with software, hardware, and SoC vendor partners.

The Role

You will contribute to the Display Software team’s work on display solutions for high-compute SoC platforms. The focus is on Linux-based display systems, including device driver development and the platform software needed to power, configure, and activate display devices. You will also coordinate with teams across software services, hardware, and SoC vendors to build and maintain a shared vehicle compute platform.

Responsibilities

  • Develop embedded software and device drivers for automotive display systems.
  • Create Linux software features that control the powering, configuration, and activation of display devices and processes.
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, and integration.
  • Partner with hardware engineers and system architects to ensure seamless integration between display software and hardware.
  • Collaborate with other engineers to optimize performance, memory usage, startup time, and power efficiency for high-performance embedded systems.
  • Deliver production-quality embedded software by applying best practices in automotive and other safety-critical domains.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in embedded software development.
  • Experience with Linux-based embedded operating systems.
  • Experience developing or integrating display software, device drivers, or display hardware.
  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems.
  • Solid understanding of embedded hardware architectures, including processors, memory management, and peripherals.
  • Knowledge of communication protocols: Ethernet, I2C, SPI, and UART.
  • Solid understanding of Linux kernel frameworks: DRM/KMS, DMA, V4L2, and device trees.
  • Experience deploying commercial embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with ARM architectures.
  • Experience with bring-up, validation, and system-level testing of SoCs and display hardware.
  • Experience with display interfaces such as DisplayPort, HDMI, or MIPI DSI is preferred.
  • Experience in automotive or safety-critical software development is preferred.
