Senior Data Engineer
Job Description
Liberty Mutual’s Data and Analytics Engineering team is hiring a Senior Data Engineer to design and deliver data solutions in the Frontier and PL Distribution spaces. In this hybrid, U.S.-based role, you will work with product owners, business stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to turn business needs into reliable, scalable data capabilities. The position requires two days in the office per week in Boston, Portsmouth, or Indianapolis.
What you’ll do
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines, data models, and integration processes using modern cloud-based technologies such as AWS and Snowflake.
- Analyze complex datasets and technical problems to build effective, flexible solutions aligned to business needs.
- Collaborate with Product Owners, business stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to translate requirements into technical data solutions.
- Build and support ETL/ELT pipelines for structured and unstructured data from internal and external sources, including APIs, flat files, and enterprise applications.
- Implement data quality checks, validation rules, reconciliations, exception handling, and monitoring to protect data integrity.
- Develop automated tests across multiple scopes such as Unit, System, Integration, and Regression to support reliability and accuracy.
- Perform data profiling, root cause analysis, and troubleshooting for data issues across production and non-production environments.
- Document data flows, data dictionaries, and technical specifications to support data governance and knowledge sharing.
- Identify and recommend continuous improvement opportunities across data engineering processes and tooling.
- Work with engineers and architects, contributing to code reviews and engineering best practices.
- Use AI-assisted development tools including GitHub Copilot as part of day-to-day delivery.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical or business discipline (or equivalent experience).
- 5-6 years of experience in data engineering, data analytics, or a related technical role.
- Strong proficiency in SQL, including complex query writing, data modeling, and work with relational and analytical databases.
- Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms such as Snowflake, AWS, or similar technologies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret and communicate data-driven insights.
- Ability to work in an agile, squad-based environment with cross-functional teams.
- Proactive, self-motivated, logical approach with strong attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including conveying technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience with data integration and ETL/ELT tools such as IDMC.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, version control (Git), and software development best practices.

Location: Boston, MA (hybrid). Compensation: USD 106,000 - 197,000 per year. Experience level: Minimum 5 years.
