Principal Software Engineer - AWS/Python Modernization
Job Description
IntegraTouch is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead modernization for a large-scale, AWS-based device management framework. This contract role combines deep architecture work with hands-on engineering to assess an existing environment, define a future-state design, prototype critical components, and help deliver production software. The platform supports a globally distributed fleet of 50,000+ devices, along with configuration and software update capabilities.
In this engagement, you will start by driving technical discovery and architectural planning, then transition into an increasing leadership role during implementation. The work spans legacy C#/.NET desktop functionality and Python-based services and web applications, with AWS modernization at the core.
Responsibilities
- Conduct a deep technical assessment of the current AWS and application architecture.
- Review existing source code, services, integrations, infrastructure, and deployment processes.
- Identify technical debt, architectural limitations, reliability issues, and modernization opportunities.
- Define the future-state cloud, software, and device-management architecture.
- Create a phased Technical Modernization Roadmap.
- Personally design, prototype, code, and build critical components of the solution.
- Develop production-quality software using Python and modern engineering practices.
- Design and develop APIs, services, integrations, and cloud-native application components.
- Support modernization of legacy C#/.NET/WPF functionality into modern cloud and web architectures.
- Work with modern front-end technologies such as React and/or Angular.
- Architect and implement AWS services supporting large-scale device management.
- Evaluate AWS IoT and related technologies for device communication, configuration, telemetry, and software distribution.
- Design event-driven, distributed, and highly available systems where appropriate.
- Implement Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, AWS CDK, and/or CloudFormation.
- Improve CI/CD, automated testing, deployment, monitoring, and observability.
- Build prototypes and proofs of concept to validate architectural decisions.
- Participate in code reviews and help establish engineering standards and patterns.
- Mentor and provide technical direction to other software and cloud engineers.
- Partner with engineering leadership and stakeholders to move from strategy to working software.
Requirements
- 12+ years of progressive experience across software engineering, cloud engineering, and architecture.
- Experience leading complex application and cloud modernization initiatives.
- Deep architecture and hands-on engineering expertise with AWS.
- Strong software engineering foundation with significant Python development experience.
- Experience designing and building distributed, scalable, highly available production systems.
- Experience modernizing legacy applications and architectures.
- Experience with modern front-end frameworks, preferably React and/or Angular.
- Working knowledge of C#/.NET and legacy desktop application architectures.
- Strong API, microservices, integration, and event-driven architecture experience.
- Infrastructure as Code experience with Terraform, AWS CDK, and/or CloudFormation.
- Strong CI/CD, DevOps, automated testing, monitoring, and observability experience.
- Ability to create architecture that can be implemented, including when critical components must be prototyped and engineered personally.
- Experience leading and mentoring other senior engineers.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- U.S. Citizenship Required due to applicable customer, contractual, and project requirements.
Technologies
- AWS, Python, C#/.NET, WPF, React, Angular
- AWS IoT
- Terraform, AWS CDK, CloudFormation
- CI/CD, Microservices, Event-Driven Architecture, Serverless
- Containers, Kubernetes, Linux
- Android, Generative AI, LLMs, RAG, LLM, Edge Computing
What success looks like
The goal is not only to keep the current environment running, but to determine how it should be modernized, rearchitected, and engineered for the future. The next-generation platform should improve reliability, scalability, resiliency, and maintainability while supporting management for a large globally distributed device population, including device configuration and lifecycle management, software and firmware update capabilities, intelligent routing and communications, cloud-native design, automation and repeatability, observability, and operational visibility.
As the Principal Architect, you will determine which components are retained, refactored, replaced, or completely rearchitected, and you will help validate decisions through prototyping and proofs of concept.
Role focus: Architecture + Engineering
- Initial phase: act as Principal Modernization Architect for discovery, evaluation, future-state architecture, prototypes, and an actionable Technical Modernization Roadmap.
- Implementation phase: increasingly operate as a Lead Software Engineer and technical authority to turn architecture into production software.
- Maintain hands-on ownership of critical components, including design, prototyping, and coding.
Benefits
- Flexible schedule
Location: Remote (remote). Compensation: USD 80 - 100 per hourly. Engagement type: contract. Minimum experience: 12 years.
