Principal Software Engineer

Focused Support LLC offers a challenging Principal Software Engineer role in Columbia, MD with a hybrid work arrangement. This position blends hands-on delivery with strategic architecture, giving you the opportunity to lead scalable, secure systems while mentoring engineering teams. The compensation ranges from USD 185,000 to 240,000 per year, supported by a comprehensive benefits package. You will work with cross-functional stakeholders to align technical designs with business goals, and you will have the chance to oversee deployments at customer locations. Candidates should have a minimum of 10 years of experience and hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent professional experience. US citizenship is required, and Secret security clearance is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Architect scalable, resilient, flexible, and secure system designs that support business goals
• Ensure architectural designs align with strategic objectives and stakeholder needs
• Hands-on implementation of core frameworks and critical system components
• Proactively manage technical debt and promote best practices in code quality, security, and performance through technical leadership and code reviews
• Clearly communicate technical status and direction to non-technical Product Owners and other stakeholders
• Lead software development teams by conveying the architectural vision and maintaining an active presence in the codebase
• Mentor junior developers through pair programming, architectural guidance, and constructive feedback
• Oversee and, when needed, perform product deployment to customer locations

• Expert level proficiency with a modern object-oriented language such as Java, C++, or C#
• Proficiency in modern web design paradigms, tools, and languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Angular, etc.
• Desire and ability to quickly and effectively learn new technologies and adapt to new environments and methodologies
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Flexibility to quickly adjust to the changing needs and priorities of a small, rapidly growing business
• Bachelors or Masters Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent professional experience
• Due to security requirements US citizenship is required
