Partner 16, Data Engineer - Global Partnerships

As a Partner 16, Data Engineer for Global Partnerships at a16z, you will help shape the data infrastructure and automation that power Andreessen Horowitz’s Global Partnerships activities. This role combines hands-on engineering with strategic partnership across teams, translating unclear business needs into dependable pipelines, scalable systems, and actionable insights.

Working from San Francisco, CA (onsite), you will operate with significant independence while leading cross-functional initiatives. Your focus will span reliable data flows, operational scale, and AI-enabled workflows that reduce manual effort and improve decision-making.

Role focus

• Own and advance the Global Partnerships data ecosystem, including critical data infrastructure, systems, and automation.
• Lead complex, cross-functional initiatives with substantial autonomy across Global Partnerships and adjacent teams.
• Serve as a technical and strategic thought partner on data practices, automation, and scalable process design.

Responsibilities

• Take lead ownership of core datasets and data pipelines, acting as both a technical and strategic partner on data practices, automation, and scalable process design.
• Design and maintain scalable data infrastructure and reliable pipelines that connect Global Partnerships systems and reduce manual work and error rates.
• Uphold data precision, including monitoring and rectifying discrepancies across different platforms.
• Evaluate and implement tools and integrations to improve visibility, connectivity, and decision-making.
• Identify, pilot, and scale AI tools and agentic workflows to remove manual work, then support adoption through training, documentation, and change management.
• Drive automation and operational scale by improving processes to achieve accuracy, reliability, and speed.
• Act as an AI thought partner by staying current on emerging tools and translating them into high-leverage improvements for LP-facing and internal processes.
• Build visualizations and quantitative analyses for fund and investment performance, including projected exit scenarios, liquidity, and follow-on decisions.
• Develop fluency with the firm’s portfolio company information database, manipulating and analyzing system data to draw insights.
• Refine and calibrate portfolio performance analyses to keep findings current and relevant.

Required qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of experience, with data analytics or data engineering as preferable backgrounds.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Economics, Finance, Accounting, or a technical field preferred but not required.
• Demonstrated attention to detail across written prose and charts, tables, and spreadsheets, including the ability to stay on top of changing data or facts across multiple documents.
• Strong writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively in written form.
• Proven experience building and maintaining data workflows, automations, or integrations using Python, Javascript, or a comparable programming language.
• Experience leading ambiguous, cross-functional projects with autonomy and influence across technical and business teams.
• Experience owning or administering complex data pipelines or another critical business system, with emphasis on completeness, governance, and integration.
• Collaboration qualities including low ego, high empathy, and effectiveness with diverse teams.
• Professional responsiveness, urgency, adaptability to unforeseen developments, and a habit of asking upfront questions to avoid oversights.

Compensation and benefits

• Salary range: USD 269,000 - 314,000 per year. Actual starting pay may vary based on experience, skills, and scope.
