Lead Machine Learning Engineer - Generative AI and Agent Platforms
Job Description
JPMorgan Chase offers an onsite opportunity in Jersey City, NJ for a Lead Machine Learning Engineer focused on Generative AI and Agent Platforms. The role provides a competitive annual base salary in the range of USD 164,350 to 260,000, along with a comprehensive benefits package designed to support health, finances, learning, and work-life balance. Expect health care coverage, on-site health and wellness centers, a retirement savings plan, backup childcare, tuition reimbursement, mental health support, financial coaching, and the potential for commission-based pay or discretionary incentive compensation (cash and/or forfeitable equity).
In this role you will lead the design, build, and operation of agent platforms and AI agents for payments technology, applying MLOps and enterprise-scale capabilities across multiple business units.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end development of production AI agents across a federated portfolio, from prototype to launch and ongoing operational support.
- Build robust production retrieval systems, implementing hybrid retrieval-augmented generation (vector search plus graph-based retrieval when appropriate) with solid chunking, ranking, and grounding.
- Develop agent memory patterns, including episodic and semantic memory, with recall, summarization, and decay policies aligned to use-case needs.
- Create entitlement- and tenant-aware context assembly so agents reason only over permitted data, enabling traceability and auditability.
- Coordinate multi-agent workflows and integrate external tools and data sources through secure connectors and standardized tool interfaces.
- Develop evaluation frameworks, including task-level and end-to-end assessments, regression suites, automated scoring, and release gates for quality and safety.
- Deploy and operate agent services on AWS and/or Azure, following strong software development lifecycle practices, with emphasis on security, resiliency, and observability.
- Improve runtime performance and reliability by instrumenting tracing, monitoring, and incident-response playbooks for agent services.
- Partner with product and business leaders to translate use cases into shipped capabilities, define success metrics, and drive continuous improvement from production feedback.
Requirements
- Formal training or certification in applied AI and machine learning concepts with at least 5 years of applied experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Minimum 7 years of software development experience, including at least 4 years delivering AI or ML solutions.
- Hands-on production experience building large language model powered or agentic applications, including tracing, evaluations, and safety guardrails.
- Strong Python programming skills with solid fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and applied statistics.
- Practical experience with retrieval-augmented generation, including embedding strategies, retrieval quality measurement, and use of vector databases.
- Experience operating production workloads on AWS, Azure, or Kubernetes.
- Experience designing data models and building systems using SQL and NoSQL technologies for real-time or near-real-time use cases.
