Full Stack Software Engineer
Job Description
Join Ford’s Connected Vehicle Data Team and help build the services behind vehicle data experiences. This hybrid role in Dearborn, MI lets you work across backend, frontend, and cloud integration, including deployments to OpenShift and Google Cloud. You will build REST APIs and microservices, create UI features that help people explore vehicle data, and gain hands-on experience with streaming patterns and large-scale data workflows.
On top of building core products, the team also applies AI to real engineering problems, such as helping users ask plain-English questions about vehicle data. You will contribute to work that spans API and UI for an assistant, LLM API integrations for drafting content, and test cases that validate AI output for accuracy and safety.
What you’ll do
- Build and maintain REST APIs and microservices in Java and Spring Boot, using SQL databases and BigQuery.
- Create features and reusable components in React or Angular with TypeScript so people can explore vehicle data.
- Develop streaming integrations using Kafka and Pub/Sub, including producers and consumers, and learn retry behavior, failed message handling, and message ordering.
- Package apps with Docker and deploy to OpenShift and GCP services such as Cloud Run and GKE, including configuration, secrets, and health checks.
- Write unit and integration tests with JUnit and frontend test tools (for example, Jest or Cypress), participate in code reviews and pairing, and build toward test-driven development.
- Add logging, alerts, and dashboards in Cloud Logging and Cloud Monitoring, and troubleshoot production issues using runbooks.
- Work with Git and CI/CD tools (including GitHub Actions and Tekton), keep dependencies current, and follow secure coding, API security, and data privacy practices.
- Use GitHub Copilot daily for code, tests, and documentation.
- Collaborate with senior engineers, the team’s technical lead (Anchor), product owners, data engineers, and platform teams to plan work in small increments and ship.
What you bring
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
- 1 to 4 years of professional software engineering experience (strong internships or co-ops count).
- Hands-on experience building backend services or REST APIs in Java with Spring Boot.
- Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
- Day-to-day experience with Git and experience writing automated tests (for example, JUnit).
- A basic understanding of Docker and deploying to a cloud or container platform.
- A habit of confirming outcomes by asking “how will I know this works?” and testing before shipping.
Additional experience that may help
- GCP experience, especially Cloud Run, GKE, BigQuery, Pub/Sub, Cloud SQL, or Cloud Storage.
- Kafka or Pub/Sub, including retry concepts such as dead-letter queues and message ordering.
- OpenShift or Kubernetes concepts like deployments, config maps, secrets, and health checks.
- CI/CD with GitHub Actions, Tekton, or Jenkins, code scanning tools (for example SonarQube, Checkmarx, FOSSA), and some Terraform.
- Monitoring experience with Cloud Monitoring, Dynatrace, Grafana, or Splunk, including reliability targets (SLOs).
- Agile practices such as Scrum, XP, test-driven development, or pair programming.
- Hands-on AI work, such as calling an LLM API, building a small RAG app, or an agent (school, hackathon, and personal projects count).
- Python for scripting or data work.
- Experience with IoT, telemetry, or other time-series data.
Compensation and benefits
- Salary: USD 85,400 to 166,600 per year
- Immediate medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage
- Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new parent ramp-up programs, and subsidized back-up child care
- Family building benefits including adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement, fertility treatments, and more
- Vehicle discount program for employees and family members, and management leases
- Tuition assistance
- Established and active employee resource groups
- Paid time off for individual and team community service
- Generous paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day
- Paid time off and the option to purchase additional vacation time
